    Dunno man.
If you travel to a top class gym, get the trainers to help you, live the life and show interest, I think you can transform yourself.

    Look at Mickey Rourke...

Of course selective match making, good management and promotion help also.

Gavin Rees, Carlos Maussa, Carlos Baldomir and John Ruiz are all proof that talent isn't everything but that sheer luck and persistance can pay off.

You can't compare "world" champions with journeymen

There is a level of shittiness.

yes that will go a long way but you can't tell me that with all of the above you could turn Nicky Cook in to a Barrera/Morales/Marquez/Pacquiao? I really don't see that happening.

I do, it's how they're raised in the sport in my opinion.

Nice little nature/nurture debate going on here.

My own opinion is that nature accounts for maybe 25% of a boxers talent, nurture another 25% but that at least 50% comes from the scientifically unmeasurable quality known as individual human will.

Bilbo I think we're onto the same train of thought here.

A fighters mentality plays a dramatic part in his development.
A fighter needs to be balanced and centred.

I believe Marco Antonio Barrera was a good example.
Not a great natural athlete. But one knew he would become a success due to his sheer will and determination.

However I'm sorry I've got to nitpick.
Many recall he shared a ring with Hamed, Harrisson, Freitas and Rees.
He didn't fight those fighters without gaining some expierience.
His mentality was not to learn however, it was to make money.

When ever some guy commits a crime or screams about life being unfair and too difficult to make an honest living they should show them a picture of Buckley and his carrer...No harder way to put food on the table then the way he did it...Made an honest living and has nothing to be ashamed of...IMO he was damn tough....10 KO's losses in almost 300 fights...

Um, used to play football, runs marathons in his spare time. I'd call that athletic.

I have no idea of the ratio but it is no doubt a combination of nature/nurture. I just think young Donny is seeing it from his own POV, nothing wrong with that ambition.

I have posted on more than one ocaision ref Peter buckley he has been a great servant to boxing for the last 20 odd years & given many an up & coming boxer a good learning fight & far from slagging him off he should be praised for his contribution most times he came in at days sometimes hours notice to save a show without the likes of boxers in the Buckley mould many shows would be cancelled. I hope he stays in boxing what better guy to teach the art of self defence

Just looking at the natural ability thing!!!!

    Andy Lee; 3 National Titles
    John Duddy; 1 National Title
    Paul McCloskey; 3 National TITLES
Barry McGuigan; 2 or 3 National Titles

Hitman Donny; 3 National Titles at 20.

    I like my odds.
