Actually, I checked on a couple of different websites, and the answer is 17,508. Yep. It caught me by surprise. I imagine some of them might be kind of small.
I'm thinking some of them must be stepping stone sized.

I think Panama is the southernmost country in central America.

That is correct sire. For bonus points, name the countries directly to the north and south of Panama. For even more points, name a famous variety of marijuana that came from Panama.

Yeah, a quick look says it finally was on it's own in 1903, so that's pretty young. I was gonna say some European countries might be younger, but then I thought many of them were probably countries before they were annexed into the old USSR or Yugoslavia.

Interesting that Panama never had control or ownership of the canal territiories until 1999.

I believe the next country to the south of Panama would be Peru, to the east is Columbia, to the west is Costa Rica I think? Directly to the North is the US. As for the mary jane, um Panama Jack?

Not quite what I had in mind, but I see what you mean. OK, Panama is kind of on an angle. To the North and south I meant to the immediate neighbors north and south. More or less to the north of Panama is Costa Rica, more or less to the South is Columbia. Panama is also bordered by the Pacific on the west and the Caribbean on th east.

The marijuana, famous in the 70s, is known as Panama Red. Here's a link. Good old Wiki.

I had to check a map after I answered this, I was wrong north and south.
The next country to the north is Cuba and to the south is Equador. Of course, there's a bit of water in the way. Can I get half credit on this one? Interesting article on the red BTW.
