More action from Friday night’s Hennessy Sports bill at the Doncaster Dome featured Andy “Bellie’ Bell of Doncaster who faced Rob Nelson of Bradford for the new English Super Flyweight title (8 stone 3 or 115 lb) getting it’s first showing in Britain.

It was a fairly evenly matched fight in the first half of the contest, but homeboy Bell looked the sharper of the two despite the twenty two year old having trouble making the weight on Friday, being half a pound over.

Then, mid-way through round seven, a peach of a right hand from Bell sent Nelson to the canvas, but he immediately jumps up to take the count from referee Mickey Vann. The shots continued to land on Nelson and he sustained a cut to the left brow.

Bell kept up the pressure with a flurry of shots as he backed Nelson into the corner. In the closing seconds of the round, Nelson, 6-1-2 (0), was rocked by a solid left, then a right and Mickey Vann stepped in to stop the contest. Bell, 9-3 (3), and his corner were ecstatic as he became the first English Super Flyweight Champion!

Likeable Salford based Lee Meager faced Hungarian Laszlo “The Rock’ Komjathi, and it was the ex-British Lightweight Champion’s first fight in 10 months, having suffered defeat and lost his title to Jon Thaxton.

In the last half minute of round two, referee Howard Foster took time out to warn Meager to keep his hands up. Both men are marked up by the end of the round, with Meager sustaining a nick on the left brow.

With 35 seconds of round three to go, Meager landed a right to the face of the Hungarian, followed by a body shot with the left and Howard Foster calls to “stop boxing’.

While Meager looked away, Komjathi threw a right hand which landed on the cheek of Meager. Howard Foster stopped to warn Meager about “barging’ with the shoulder, while Komjathi suffered cuts above both brows.

And as they went back to their corners at the end of round four, Meager was also showing a cut above the left eye. While trainer Robert McKracken worked on Meager’s cuts, Komjathi’s corner signaled his retirement and the fight is stopped.

It was a great action-packed fight, with both men kept busy throughout the contest. Komjathi drops to 26-15-1 (11).

Afterwards, Meager, 21-2-1 (8), said he’d “like a rematch with Thaxton or to face [European Champion] Romanov”.

Stablemate and British Super Middle Champ Carl Froch was sat alongside Meager as Sky TV’s Ed Robinson interviewed him. Froch said he “was really looking forward to the fight against [Robin] Reid’ [on November 2nd] “I’m firing on all cylinders so Reid better be ready for me!’ he said.
