I was a Calzaghe fan, but him 'defeating two of their most notorious boxers in their backyard' is misleading. He fought both guys at least 4 years later than when it might have meant something. The Hopkins win was a close & controversial one, whilst Jones was a shadow of himself. I think what really hurt him was that he turned down a fight with Pavlik, which I see no way he wouldn't of won, to fight an old Roy Jones. It didn't feel like the right end to his career to me, beating up on a pale imitation of RJJ.
His wins over Kessler & Lacy are great, but I wanted him to take on another young American talent, preferably Dawson who unlike Lacy isn't hyped off wins over sub-standard fighters. I think Calzaghe would still do it, but I'd love to see the fight. I'd also love him to come back & beat the shit outta Carl Froch![]()
