Today my mom, her brother and 2 sisters all have their own gardens and the day I'll have a home, if I have enough land, I think i'll do the same; There's nothing as good old vegetables from a garden for taste and freshness and as Killersheep stated, it is quite rewarding to grow our own stuff.
Yeah it feels great working the land, as a note to what you said you don't need a lot of land to grow some stuff. A pot with a tomato plant will provide tons of tomatoes if you keep the nitrogen levels correct. Almost all herbs too can be grown and thrive in small pots.
Oh you definitely don't need that much land for sure but in Quebec, it is quite common to have a big piece of land and peoples often make a garden by summer that could provide them for almost all winter with stuff, a tradition that comes from the old days where it could take hours to go downtown by winter because of the huge amount of snow with your horse and sledge. One of favorite part are the spices I think, there is nothing like fresh home grown basil and rosemary.
