In Quebec, it is quite common that most family on the countryside (or a lot of them) are growing their own veggies. I remember when my grandma and grandpa used to be a bit younger and not on the verge of going back to earth (so all my youth), they had that incredibly huge garden with any veggies you could possibly hope for. Today my mom, her brother and 2 sisters all have their own gardens and the day I'll have a home, if I have enough land, I think i'll do the same; There's nothing as good old vegetables from a garden for taste and freshness and as Killersheep stated, it is quite rewarding to grow our own stuff.
Yeah it feels great working the land, as a note to what you said you don't need a lot of land to grow some stuff. A pot with a tomato plant will provide tons of tomatoes if you keep the nitrogen levels correct. Almost all herbs too can be grown and thrive in small pots.
For every story told that divides us, I believe there are a thousand untold that unite us.
