Lets fast forward to 2003 which is what I consider the turning point for Pacquiao in the running.
This year, Pacquiao moving up from 130 defeated Marco Antonio Barerra, THIS was the super breakout of Pacquiao's performance because he absolutely dominated and annihilated Marco Antonio Barerra and this is where the hype train really got behind him. Some of Barerra's supporters said that he dealt with a lot of personal issues going into the fight, controversy about the plate in his head, and his training camp burning down in Big Bear. But the win is still a great win and the start of the Pacquiao train.
Now by this time, Mayweather had already won his second title in a second different weight class, against Jose Luis Castillo in a fight many thought he'd lost, Mayweather complained of an injured shoulder afterwards, and gave Castillo an immediate rematch in which he answered all the questions. And in 2003 defended his title against Victoriano Sosa and Phillip Ndou in which was since the Corrales fight his best offensive performance.
Advantage: Pacquiao
Pacquiao has the advantage in this section, definately, Mayweather may have won the Lightweight title from Castillo and had some good impressive defenses. But Pacquiao beating Barerra is a hard hard card to trump. Regardless of personal issues.
Now moving onto 2004
At this point the Pacquiao train was in full effect, this was his attempt at a third title in a third weight class against Juan Manuel Marquez, Marquez who was a known but never overly impressive to the mainstream boxing fan. This was the night Pacquiao was expected to storm Marquez, this is the night that Marquez made his name. Pacquiao dropped Marquez early in the first round 3 times and many people felt the fight was over. But Marquez adapted and gave Pacquiao hell for the rest of the fight with many thinking Marquez had made one of the best comeback in boxing history. While some feeling Pacquiao given his early success may have won the fight. The fight was a draw with many fans clamoring for a rematch. He also had another fight that was basically a keep busy fight also for a number 2 ranking for a title in that division. Pacquiao was the favorite and won. But had shown improvements of fighting with more then just his left hand.
In 2004 it was an inactve year for Mayweather he only had one fight, his first at 140 against former champion DeMarcus Corley who had just come off a title losing effort against Zab Judah. Corley had some success stunning mayweather briefly in the third round, but Mayweather quickly took over and dominated Corley with a brilliant offensive display making many feel that Mayweather was adapting a more crowd pleasing style. This was also the year Roy Jones lost to Antonio Tarver and the eye was turned to Mayweather to see if he would be the next era in boxing.
Advantage: Pacquiao
While Mayweather had a more impressive performance against Corley. Pacquiao fought the better opponent in Marquez, and it was a draw, he was also more active this year but they both really didnt achieve much in 2004 but Pacquiao got himself ranked at number 2 while Mayweather defeated the former champion. So it was almost even but the Marquez fight puts it in Pacquiao's corner.
