I'm kind of in the same boat. I was hoping Vitali would produce a late career beatdown, but I was actually quite impressed with how sharp Solis looked. Sure, he is too heavy but he seems to have skills too. He was winning that round fairly clearly. Vitali was more active, but not really landing with anything. And then the leg went.
The shot that Vitali threw landed only partially and I didn't see a particularly pained look on the face of Solis from that. As you say, he stepped back and his leg went. There is no way to fake ligament damage nor continue with that kind of injury. His leg was totally gone.
Solis has gone up in my book, but I can see why everyone else wants to put him down. He got a pay day for a single round, but unlike someone like Audley, he actually looked pretty sharp for how long he lasted. Hopefully he will bounce back, learn his lesson and do well.
