Just got myself a hybrid - narrow tyres similar to a road racer but a bit more sturdy, normal mountain bike handles so best of both worlds.

Highly recommended by cycling enthusiasts and glad i listened

ooops just saw how old the post is.

What you got, I took ages to get mines.

I got Carrera Crossfile 2, cost £330 Halfords. I decided the thicker tyres were better if it snowed or if I wanted to go on canal pathways.

I have a Viking urban trail paid £260 for it. doesn't get used as much as it should though.

Cycled 35 miles on Sunday very tiring and a bit dangerous because it was very windy. The wind knocked me into the next lane of the road and I was lucky no car was coming. It was a very good work out and my knees feel better for it as I have been trying to build them up by playing football but kept on getting injured.

I also had a runny nose and red eyes after the ride so need to get a mask and glasses.

Did 16 miles after I missed last week watching the Marg v Cotto fight. Legs feel strong and cycling in the higher gear for better work out. Got glasses to stop my eyes from going red from the wind.

I took my bike out today and I did not enjoy it and it was not £600 well spent.

Felt every bump in the road, bent over in a odd position, can not get to the breaks in an emergency and worried that the bike would get nicked all day!

You'll get used to it really quickly. You won't look back (especially because you'll fall over if you do).

Hold the handles not on the place you would on a mountain bike but either on the 'drops' (the curved down bit) or on top but forward, so palms facing in towards each other not back as the would be on mountain bike. You need to be able to reach brakes and unless you have tiny hands you can if you hold the bars in the right place. It's hard to explain.

I will give it a week otherwise it is going in the shed. It is like having an expensive Ferrari but not liking the ride.

On this picture, I would have the join between my thumb and index finger on top of the bars but right at the front, directly behind the gear shits, so your palms face in towards each other. That way you have good control but can still reach the brakes.

Give it a week and you won't notice the bumps and the position will feel comfortable. Trust me everyone thinks that when they first ride a proper road bike.

The other thing to take into consideration is the pedals as standard are made for special shoes that clip in to them which makes them even more faster and are efficient. I did not buy them and they hurt my feet through my work shoes.

I fell off my bike going down the subway which was slippy from the rain and leaves. Knee is bruised and I was in extreme pain. Lucky it was the old bike.
