The best tool he's got is is jab, which is ramrod and well timed. His left hook is good but mayweather's philly shell puts a dampener these punches. in fact left hooks are liability against mayweather as he counters so well off of them.
So how does cotto have a good chance, other than a punchers chance?
1. Use the jab - De la Hoya had great success with his jab, Cotto used it well vs Mosley. The timing of the jab nullifies speed.

2. Land the hook often - work the body, work the arms, the shoulder, hips, everything. Miguel has a powerful punch, one powerful enough to break jaws, one powerful enough to stop a fighter with a shot to the shoulder. Working to the body takes the legs away, working on the guard takes the defense and speed away....after that Floyd may be downright normal if all goes to plan.

3. Make Floyd forget the right hand - Cotto can switch up and has big power in both hands...if he switches southpaw and can blast a right hook in and make contact then great, if he can lull Floyd into range and time a solid right cross from an orthodox stance even better...but Floyd must be more wary of the left hook than the right hand in order for Cotto to catch him offguard.

No doubt it's an uphill battle for Cotto, but he's a warrior, he has heart
Yeah, like i said cotto has a good jab, and the jab is key to any plan to beat mayweather.
But IMO Cotto trying to land left hooks is playing into mayweathers hands. The right side of mayweathers body and head is almost airtight, despite occasionally pulling back from hooks with his chin exposed. For the most part floyd only has to watch for the opponents jabs and right hands, and cotto's right hand isn't that fast. Cotto will eat enough right uppercuts and crosses to make him seriously think about throwing anymore left hooks.
Ok, i don't want to write cotto off totally, but if he wants to win he's going to have to have a better plan than just blasting mayweather with his power and trying to break his shoulder. I reckon he needs to pressure floyd into leading first or feint him into throwing a counter before he tries using the hook. then again you need good hand speed to make someone buy the feint, and i just don't think cotto's fast enough at this stage.
