He had a terminal illness that progressed to the point where he was given mere months to live and it destroyed over half of his respiratory capacity. He was unable to work or to learn new skills for years while he became ill, underwent treatment, and slowly recovered. I would also argue that he suffered some pretty serious psychological trauma as a result.

I know he comes across as a bit nuts as times, and he does play something of a character on here, but the guy has gone through things (including and beyond his illness) that most of us have never had to endure.

He has admitted he doesn't work (I that loosely since he only worked as a fucking porter not brain surgeon) because he's better off not working than losing his benefits.

    What missy said plus...

If everything he says is true, his "condition" prevents him from nothing. He has a girlfriend, he drives, goes on holiday, drinks and takes drugs...

I've got nothing against Bilbo but feel no sympathy for him unless he's a massive bullshitter.

There's 2 sides to this one:

That guys has been to hell and back - worse things than you can possibly imagine. As a result of the drug he took when having Chemo he has Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease which will kill him. So I have massive sympathy.

I have spoken to him about the 'not working' whilst climbing mountains thing, because that was really winding me up. The fact is like it or not it's the system that is fucked. He got a part time job and it changed his health status (which was/is permenantly unfit to work due to a terminal illness) He was even advised by the benefits office that he would be vastly worse off if he worked. For all his talk about gyms and mountains, his health is up and down (often admitted to hospital with respitory problems) so he cannot work full time and come off benefits. In an ideal world, I would say take a part time job and lose some benefits, but in the real world who's gonna do that if the system is fucking you for trying to get off your ass!

I always wonder if the self banning is more a statement of self importance... I mean how hard can it be to not come here and post if you have stuff to do

its a tag to let people know he has gone and to hopefully miss him, Miles does a similar thing with his weekly I'm taking a break threads.

    very strange.

As for sympathy... this is a place to chill out and have a laugh with people you have gotten to know good or bad, I have sympathy for everyone here if they are having problems in their life but I honestly switch off and skip threads if they keep posting about it.

I'm the guy in the real world who says to someone "alright" but does not want to hear someone say... "actually no my wife has just left me and I have cancer in my nuts"

    1. He went on a trip to climb a hill once, that is hardly mountain climbing. 2. I've never once heard him say that he has gone to the gym, let alone every day. The guy has a rowing machine in his apt. that he does for exercise and therapy. 3. People with disabilities are allowed to have social lives. Going to the pub, the market, or wherever doesn't mean someone isn't disabled.

And yes, having to deal with a terminal illness and being told you have months to live in your early 20's and then having to spend a number of years recovering, all the while knowing that your illness could return to kill you at any time, is an ordeal that most people do not have to endure. It's one thing to have that sort of stuff happen when you're 75, but it pretty rare to have to deal with it when you're basically a kid.

How you feel about someone's personality is one thing, but that is a shitty situation for anyone to have to go through.

His story has always been consistent over the many years I have known him and it certainly hasn't bought him any sympathy from the majority of posters, why would he lie about it?

I don't care about Bilbo being a benefits scrounger or a nonce or anything like that. I like him. Although I obviously don't actually know him.

However, I just don't understand how his "condition" prevents him from living a normal life? If he was some shut-in, manic depressed fella, who had no chance of having a relationship, had no real friends and relied on this forum/chat rooms for company then I would feel sorry for him. But his life is nothing like that. He's just a guy who was once seriously ill but now lives a normal life. That's all I see.

I'd suggest that he does spend an unhealthy amount of time in his apartment, and his recent love life does suggest that he doesn't have the best social life. He gets a lot of stick on this forum, and generally he takes it pretty well, which is a credit to him in my view.

And I think he's alright most of the time, if a little strange.

He has this and will probably die from it within 15 years
