Broner not making 130 is not surprising. In all honesty I was beginning to wonder how he managed it. He looks like a full on welter at fight time and fought much earlier in his career as high as 140 and hung out in the 135 area.

Another pushed product interested more in being a loud mouth character than actually making weight and honoring a contract. We need less of this bullshit. Right now he's more "Big Brother" and less "World Championship boxing", pretty sure I watched him lose to Daniel Ponce de leon too. Other than that I'm sure he's a great guy.
does broner have talent? Yes
has he shown much? No. he beat Litzau and Perez (who tested positive or nose candy after the fight).
he didn't face any of the top 5 guys at the top of the division. Are they big names? No. Uchiyama is undefeated. he can fight. he beat salgado who is also highly ranked. Salgado-he can fight. He can punch a little. He is the guy that first stretched Linares in 1 round.
Broner easily could have made a fight with someone better than Perez.
Escobedo is a solid fighter and could possibly give Broner a fight tomorrow night. So what did broner do? came in at 133.5. if he was going to do anything like that they could have started negotiating things a few days ago.
instead he let escobedo go through the sacrifice of getting all the way down to 130. while broner didn't do so. And escobedo has fought some at 135. I would guess the last few pounds to make 130 are far from easy.
so broner knew he wasn't going to make weight and made sure his opponent sacrificed himself to make it. so he can come into the fight not weakened at all by making weight and escobedo will have.
Great job. when you have talent you shouldn't try to gain advantages like that. amateurish.
Broner is only 22 so he is still very much an immature, self centered, egotistical little asshole. Surprised a little bit he has so many children at such a young age.
His "Free Money May" T-shirt, shit head attitude toward making weight and fake marriage proposal at the end of the fight didn't exactly endear him to the American audience.
But, I figure he wants to go the villain route and piss white America off and what not.
Worked wonders for Floyd in terms of $$$.
Anyway Broner performed well and patiently picked Escobedo apart. Escobedo gave hints he didn't want to be there before the fight and was just there for a paycheck and his corner throwing the towel in so early seemed to confirm that.
Thought Escobedo had an excellent jab and was getting some good body work in, but didn't seem to discourage Broner much.
"You knocked him down...now how bout you try knockin me down ?"

Kirkland Laing here, steaming drunk at 9am. Too soon to say how good he really is and I don't see Golden Boy letting Gamboa anywhere near him. I think they'll keep protecting him for a long time yet. Hopefully he develops into a Mayweatheresque talent but there's a long, long way to go yet before he gets anywhere near that level. He's definitely an arsehole too but that's all good for boxing, whether people love him or hate him he'll create enough bullshit to get them watching and if his talent develops like his ego boxing is onto a winner.

I hope Marquez fights Broner, I'd love Marquez to get in the ring with him and teach him a lesson. I think he needs putting down a peg, and who better to deliver that than Marquez?? It would be great to see !
He's even more unlikable than Floyd Mayweather is.
There would have a been a significant difference in the outcome if Broner had come in at the contracted weight of 130 and fought Escobedo at that weight. Instead he fucking cheated and probably weighed close to welterweight (147) during last night's fight.
In Re: "Free Money May", for what, abusing his ex-wife and children? Broner is an imbecile.

Remember when you were a little toothless kid with a snotty nose and you watch hours of your favorite super hero movies, then you'd tie a towel around your neck and run around the house screaming like a lunatic in some exagerated deep voice jumping off the stairs actually thinking you could fly...? Broner is dumb little kid. I think boxing is secondary to him and he (along with more and more) is doing it backwards. You reep the reward after the hardship of labor and time. He's a con man and as a wise man with a big clock around his neck once said...Don't believe the Hype!

I certainly agree with all the criticism about not even trying to make weight and (more importantly) not telling Escobedo about it until he saw for himself at the weigh-in. They should have disclosed it weeks ago when it became apparent 130 wasn't going to happen.
But I disagree that there would have been a significant difference in the outcome. Broner obviously hit harder than Escobedo and likely hit harder than he would have if he'd come in lighter. But the big difference-maker was speed. And I don't think it was the extra weight that made him faster -- typically doesn't work that way. Sure, maybe he doesn't get the guy out of there that fast and then his stamina gives out because he had to cut weight too hard. But really, I think he's clearly a class or two above Escobedo talent-wise no matter what the weight.
Unfair advantage aside (which Escobedo did agree to, so I wouldn't call it cheating), Broner looked pretty phenomenal. I really want to see him fight Gamboa. The DeMarco fight he's talking about would be great too.
He is a talented fighter no question. But as others have mentioned, the competition he has faced has been a joke. HBO and company are clearly pushing for him to be the next big thing and they are padding his record accordingly. It's easy to make the comparisons to Floyd...he imitates his defensive style and brash personality. But Floyd was MUCH more polished at the same age...just a whole different pedigree IMO. And Floyd does the majority of his antics and crap talking to promote a fight. In the ring he is a professional. The whole "will you brush my hair" non sense was just plain corny and stupid. Lets see how this kid handles stiffer competition.
Like I said a long time ago boxing needs "Characters" to stay relevant. People will tune in to see Broner lose and when he wins it will piss them off.
I'm pretty sure Broner "acting like Mayweather" is something HBO adores, as the real Mayweather is going to retire soon. So Broner is something they need ratings wise. Just as Timothy Bradley was "acting like Mayweather" in the leadup to the Pacquiao fight.
