I mean, if your gonna measure the 'greatness of Larry Holmes' by putting it up against 'the greatness of Rocky Marciano' then yeah he is the greatest of all time no question - but if you wanna be serious and open-minded then basically whatever Lyle said.

ı dıdnt thınk you would need me to lıst all the thıngs and reasons why Holmes ıs sometımes consıdered the best of all tıme. by narrowly thınkıng ıt ıs because of my mentıon of Marcıano's record you are clearly not consıderıng countless of other reasons. I thınk I am beıng quıte serıous and openmınded when I mentıon hıs 20 defenses and the calıber of hıs opponents. Wıtherspoon and Weaver and Cooney and Shavers were no slouches, nor were Carl Wıllıams for example or Ken Norton back ın 1978, and even LARRY'S lesser opponents lıke Snıpes and Spınks were atleast as good as the tomato cans that the Klıtschkos have been fıghtıng. I wıll not go on as you are not even consıderıng the possıbılıty serıously. I am tryıng to gıve perhaps the greatest of all tıme some props. Vıtalı wouldnt touch a prıme Larry Holmes. NOPE.
2nded
clinching , thumbed Shavers in their rematch which led 2d standing stoppage , fought weak opposition and avoided almost every threat , avoided n immediate Norton rematch after getting a gift against him .
factoid : did u know that Holmes was stopped twice by d 2 years younger than himself Nick Wells in d amateurs ? Holmes wasn't so green then , he was Ali's sparing partner and 2 years older than Wells .
Holmes was also stopped by d 1 year younger than himself Duane Bobick in d amateurs , and later avoided him in d pros and avenged his loss 2 him by beating Duane's younger and lesser brother , Rodney .
D automatic cookie cutter reply 4 this will b : Duane did not deserve a fight , but didn't he ? fighters do tend 2 try 2 avenge amateur losses in d professionals , as Miguel Cotto did against Mohamed Abdulaev , Tim Littles (initially) did against Frankie Liles , Tyson did against Henry Tillman and Joe Frazier did against Buster Mathis and there r more examples 2 it . But Holmes wanted nothing 2 do with Wells nor with Duane Bobick . he did fight d lesser Mike Weaver and Scott LeDoux , so Y was Duane whom reached a 38-0 record at a time and stopped both Weaver and LeDoux as well as stopped Weaver and Holmes himself at d amateurs avoided in d pros ? because Holmes' only assets were his size & dedication. His chin was far from what it is sometimes made 2b and yes , i know d dry listed facts , but unlike u cookie cutters , i also know beyond them so spare d cookie cutting .

God is a concept, By which we can measure, Our pain, I'll say it again, God is a concept, By which we can measure, Our pain, I don't believe in magic, I don't believe in I-ching, I don't believe in bible, I don't believe in tarot, I don't believe in Hitler, I don't believe in Jesus, I don't believe in Kennedy, I don't believe in Buddha, I don't believe in mantra, I don't believe in Gita, I don't believe in yoga, I don't believe in kings, I don't believe in Elvis, I don't believe in Zimmerman, I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me!!
Norton rematch , Coetzee , Duane Bobick & Nick Wells (4 him apparently) .
Thumbing Shavers was also a way of avoiding fair fight .
Also no Pinklon Thomas , Michael Dokes & Tony Tubbs , and no rematches vs Carl Williams & Tim Witherspoon whom definitely deserved them .
Lots of bums though .
D thing is , Holmes got easy and good money 4 his defenses vs bums , so it's hard 2 blame him 4 it but it does blemish his record .
He never fought Ron Lyle either which IMO would have been a decent fight although Lyle did age quite quickly around 1980....perhaps had he won the Cooney fight he would have garnered a shot
size isn't a bad thing either .
i only stated his strengths 2 precede and hopefully prevent any overrating of other attributes which i don't find him exceptionally good at .
U can't exempt him from fighting Nick Wells & Duane Bobick when u know that he fought d lesser LeDoux , Rodney Bobick & Mike Weaver and yet even worse opponents than these even .
Are you kidding me ? Larry Holmes whooped Earnie Shavers twice, apart from that lucky shot in the 7th round of there rematch, Earnie Shavers was dominated in both fights.
Ken Norton didn't get a rematch because he got KO'ed in 1 round by Earnie Shavers, hence why Earnie Shavers got his shot.
Tony Tubbs only started to become a name in 1985 when Larry Holmes was finished, so how did he duck him exactly ?
As for the other names they were only champions for a very short time, like Pinklon Thomas had a very short prime. I seriously doubt Larry Holmes would of ducked either of them especially Michael frigging Dokes![]()

I have no doubt Larry would have been a very tough match for Clay in his prime , Larry was top draw.

Holmes was a great fighter and had one of the best walk away jabs I have ever seen but his timing for making a splash in the division was impeccable. Pretty much every person in the top ten to 15 was half spent. Having said that, I think Larry would be in the top 5 in any era.

Larry Holmes was a great fighter no doubt.
Greatest of all time? No chance IMO. He had no real top notch competitors whilst in his prime and to be that GOAT, you must have the fights that define you. Wlad really reminds me a lot of Holmes. He too is in a poor era of HW boxing and it will be hard to place him in an all time list due to this fact.
I agree that Holmes beat Spinks though, but I actually think he was robbed due to the fact that in the 80's racism was still much more apparent in the media and I basically think they didn't want a black man to take a white mans record. Then again had he dealt with Spinks in the way a true HW should against a LHW (like Tyson did) then it couldn't have happened anyway.
