Default Sick and tired of hurricanes

...... which is not good... living on a tropical island and all that. But man, am I ever sick and tired of these things! We just got brushed by Tropical Storm Isaac, which then went through Haiti, Cuba, the Florida Keys.... and is now headed toward either Louisiana or Mississippi (or both). We were pretty lucky this time, but the peak of hurricane season still lies ahead (mid-September). Not only is there the casualties and damage from the storms/hurricanes themselves (wind, rain, flooding).... but usually these hurricanes take out power lines and many places stay without power or potable water for days or even weeks.

So here in the Caribbean it's hurricanes, whereas in central and midwestern U.S. it's tornadoes, and out west it's earthquakes. I've always been curious as to the biggest weather disturbances (or other natural disasters) occur frequently on the other side of the Atlantic (other than Miles, that is). Do you guys have specific worries out there in the U.K., for instance? You get any tornadoes over there?

Actually while we do not get as many Tornadoes as the USA we do have the most per unit area of any country in the world. They are not very strong though mostly F0 to F2. We moan about the rain a lot and many places do suffer from localised flooding but rarely on the scale of other countries and though you can get some pretty harsh wind conditions and storms they are nothing like those in the tropics.

Fog and black ice on the road is a big accident waiting to happen over there isnt it?

We are lucky here, rarley a tornado once every 20 years ,the most one has done is picked up a very large truck and took it a 100yards but it was ok landed on its wheels it was about 2 ft off the ground at the most. Its floods and fires with stunning weather in between for us. Sometimes northerly big winds coming out of the deserts behind the fires which is a real prick.

Terrible fog and black ice on Dartmoor were I live every winter ,and pretty full on snow in Scotland, relatively speaking. The fires for you chaps must be a nightmare and you had some pretty severe flooding recently did you not?

Lucky ducks...we've not had Hurricanes or the more welcomed Tropical Storms/Depressions in the South all that often recently. Louisianna has been hit a few times, but Florida has gone a while without one. Sure these storms are destructive and can kill people, but they are just as much of a part of nature as anything else, we need them for the rain they bring.

I for one love Hurricanes, granted I now live safely in the middle of the state so even a category 5 would do very little damage to where I live. However when I was at school along the coast we would have Hurricane Parties, if it was a category 2 or lower we would be partying our asses off...great times.

You are supposed to keep your head inside the car, not stuck out the window.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Back in '92 we had this big block party going on until this big ass hole named Andrew came along and ruined every thing.

Them were the times. We even got photos plastered all over the place (internet) before and after the party to share with guests who showed up later.

    Were some great times.

Remember Bruno telling a story when he was in Jamaica and he said he saw a hurricane for the first time in his life and he knew it was serious when he saw a cow flying past his house.
