At this point it would still be a good fight, and while the odds are in Martinez's favour, Alvarez will not be schooled like chavez jr and has more than a big punch going for him.
I'm convinced of Canelo's combination punching and the pop on his punches. Since Rigberto Alvarez hurt him, I'm not convinced of his chin. Actions speak louder than words and Canelo has faced smaller guys for a while.

I can only see Sergio come down for Floyd or Pac Man, do not see him do it for Saul. Also do not see GBP risk him fight Sergio just yet as he has plenty of good fights at the weight already like the winner of Cotto/Trout.

But here's why I think Martinez would win, watch Canelo vs Alfanzo Gomez and heck even a tiny Matthew Hatton and you'll see he'll just go to sleep for a round or two for no reason. I like him and I know he has room to grow but think of it this way

Martinez is faster, yes Canelo throws fast punches but he's a power puncher and he needs to set his foots down, Martinez on the other hand punches well on the move and as such he is 'faster' or i should perhaphs say more Agile.

Martinez is the bigger puncher, that I don't tihnk need much explanation.

Martinez Jabs....yup he jabs, this game's easy if you got a good jab.

I didn't know anything about him being hurt by rigoberto. When, what happened? I saw him get hurt against Cotto, and I thought he responded well. Martinez on the other hand doesn't respond that well to being hurt. He was hurt by Chavez and I was a nervous wreck from watching him leave his chin out and not tie up his opponent. He's wasn't as bad as Ricky Hatton when hurt but still.

you are totally right about his opponents. He is virtually neck and neck with floyd mayweather in terms of numbers of professional fights but he has not made an equivalent step up in opposition. I don't think he is picking on midgets a'la donaire, but your point stands about picking opponents who he out powers. If his chin is suspect then he would struggle with martinez in the unlikely event they fight this year.

I don't think Martinez is leagues ahead of Canelo. I do think Canelo needs to improve his foot and hand speed. The main thing he gets hit by is right hands which might be because he throws his left hook a little wide.

*If i were training Canelo, i'd take a couple more fights before a Martinez fight... but truth is, i saw nothing but destruction when he fought Lopez. Lopez is a very good fighter that would've given anyone trouble.
Canelo is the real deal. Some said"chavez is stronger"..lol... Canelo has been calling out Chavez 5 fights ago...
Martinez won't make the final bell against Canelo. Martinez doesn't get hit much, but when he does...he's shaken. Whats gunna happen when Canelo unleashes those crazy fast and HARD combo's ... i see Martinez folding like a cheap seat. And please, don't tell me Martinez is gunna ko Canelo... if Martinez couldn't ko Chavez, he's not gunna ko Canelo.

With all due respect, Canelo beat a jr welterweight. Not his fault granted as he wanted to fight Williams and then Kirkland but you cannot gauge his strength and his ability to hurt his opponent when he's fighting a 140 pound fighter blown up to 154.

I've read that Martinez responds poorly to being knocked down but as we know he requires surgery on his knee and when was KD'ed by a very very big man in Chavez he stood toe to toe and was making good account of himself.

I suppose it all depends on how old He'll get after the surgery, he is 38 years old and boxing is a young man's game. If he fight Canelo with the same athleticism and presence of mind that he had when fighting Chavez I think what you'll see is Martinez turning Canelo and pop shotting the young power puncher.

*A welterwieght? a blown up 154 pounder? Lopez had just Ko'ed Ortiz who's generally considered a big guy. Lopez looked in shape and sound. When does he not become "blown up"? Lopez would give anyone trouble...PERIOD. It was a great win cuz he litterally ran through Lopez. If Lopez is Blown up, what is Mayweather? Pac?..yet they r beating all comers.
If Canelo hits u, then u go down... that's the way it looked to me... i don't see where being may, pac , Cotto or Martinez is gunna make a diff. Canelo's defence is his offence, and right now, his offence is the best in the game.

You must be delusional to call that a great win.

It was his first fight at 154, if he were to fight two or three times at that weight class before Canelo then I wouldn't criticize the fight whatsoever but you cannot say that he really was a 154 pounder during that fight.

Read that Saul wants Floyd in May and Cotto later in the year which shows that Alvarez wants the best and no messing about for 2013.

Or he feels he is ready for the big boys. I would take Cotto/Trout winner first then Floyd.
