Roy Jones gets a lot of credit that he doesn't rate, especially when it comes to matching him historically. His fight with Hopkins is now considered a a 'great' fight, that he 'dominated', when, he actuality, it was a very uneven and disappointing effort on the part of both men. In 1951 it would have been an 8 round prelim. Beating guys like Clinton Woods and Tony Thornton, who was practically one-handed when they fought, and the 37 year old cop, and so on, doesn't make you great.
The idea that he would beat, or even be competitive with guys like Archie Moore, Billy Conn, Eddie Booker, Ezzard Charles, Ray Robinson, Burley, Bob Foster, and so many more is laughable. RJJ was tough if you were afraid of him and let him control the distance and do what he wanted to do. Technically, his skill level and his boxing IQ were, and are, minimal, and he never had the heart or the chin for a fight.
