Not trying to be funny, I think it's very sad what happened to Joe... but Joe has nobody to blame but himself for the way he ended up.

It has to be acknowledged that Schemling did what very few boxers do... successfully make the transition from boxing career to retirement. Max was a great man who will be very fondly remembered... he was a hero and definitely deserved that recognition! Great man.

It's typical of the young athletes to blow all their money without thinking, and then when the taxman comes around they're fucked. I don't think he should be above the rules just because he was a great boxer.

Joe was not in his prime, he was still learning and he was vulnerable to the right cross. Max capitalised on that weakness viciously. No shame there. Ali could have been stopped by Cooper early in his career. It can happen. Joe is a great, second best heavyweight ever.

I have watched this fight so many times over the years (until some MMA dipshit stole it) and it is one of my favorite fights of all time. That is because Schmeling fought such a brilliant tactical fight. He made that fight a duel between his right hand and the Louis jab and he refused to let any other punches be involved. Just brilliant how he did that.
The way Schmeling shades his body to his own right, keeps low and his weight back, Louis cannot land anything other than the jab, and he has to reach for that. So he gets hit with right hands. Another thing to watch...when Louis starts looking to counter the Schmeling right, watch how Max anticipates the counters. How he gets his right hand in position to catch the uppercut, and his left over to catch the hook.
For my money Louis is the best HW, but he got out foxed that night.

I read a story about Marciano and louis and comebacks. They did a promotional appearance for a hw title fight and heard the $amounts being tossed around. As they left in a limo, Rocky jumped out and started running along side the car. Louis asked what he was doing. Marciano replied "Making a comeback. Did you hear what they are getting paid?" And Louis jumped out and started running, too..
I think Louis was the best, then Dempsey, then Tunney, then Marciano. (Ali doesn't always break my top 10) But, when it comes to marciano, his conditioning and Goldman make him real tough to beat.

@El Kabong dont think you like rocky do you? I didnt even know the great archie moore dropped marciano no disgrace in one of the greatest light heavies dropping you imo. You have to respect the fact marciano was a machine he ate and breathed boxing training and running i read he ran 13 miles everyday without fail even on christmas. It was his lack of talent that casts doubts on him but he was one of the all time greats. Biggest heart ever!

Rocky is a favourite of mine along with tyson and ali. I honestly rate tyson very high but my top list changes everyday ....
