Joe Louis was a great man, the government screwed him over which is how he became broke and stayed broke, a very sad end for a great man. He helped break the color barrier for the PGA tour & refused to hold exhibitions in segregated crowds when he was in the Armed Forces.....great man.
Brockton, Schmelling caught Louis off guard it was a crossroads fight a cagey vet vs a young up & comer and Joe had to learn his lesson.....he didn't lose again until 1950. 12 years of being undefeated. Conn was slick, Marciano was not slick. Two Ton Tony knocked Joe down, but that's it. Joe Louis as old as he was knocked Rocky down, what does that tell you brockton
Joe Louis is the greatest heavyweight champion of ALL-TIME bar none...... fucking FACT, end of discussion
He was in the Army & doing exhibitions and the government wanted their cut afterwards and he never caught back up. A simple Presidential pardon would have helped Joe out plenty but one was never given.
I guess I was thinking about Moore when Rocky was knocked down...eh, what does that tell you about The Rock? Archie was like 85 when they fought.
Definitely. But it shouldn't be that way. These guys should bite the bullet, admit to themselves "Ok I have all this money, but I have no experience dealing with a ton of money and no credentials to manage it properly so I'm going to get help." And if they don't and go broke, they only have themselves to blame.
These guys are usually so fractured and insecure as people, and boxing makes up so much of who they are, that they can't cope with life after their careers. That's why I have so much respect for guys like Schmeling, who made the transition so well. And guys like Marvin Hagler, who retired, STAYED retired and moved on with their lives.
