Why did Harry Carpenter call Ali his slave name Cassius Clay?

Watching Ali v Frazier 1 and I'm getting a little annoyed on Harry Carpenters commentary, he keeps calling Ali by his slave name Clay.....is it due to the fact that Carpenter was ignorant to the name change or was it just ignored by the media?

Carpenter was still a legend but found this to be disrespectful to Ali

So very true, Ali was one of the most disrespectful pricks to ever step into a ring.
Don't talk about building up the gate, the prick enjoyed every disrespectful word he said, especially about black fighters.
I'm not going to use the word hate, but my disrespect for Ali is healthy and will be as long as I breathe.
What ever name you use Ali is a first class prick. IMO
