Default WBA kicking Iinterim titles to the curb

    By Gabriel F. Cordero

An important source has indicated to Fightnews.com that there’s a possibility that by mid-year the WBA may eliminate interim world titles that currently lead to mandatory or compulsory fights with the regular world champion. Apparently WBA Executive Vice President Gilberto Jesus Mendoza is working on the situation and is looking to phase out WBA interim world champions by 2014.

Previously the interim champion designation was used only when the acting champion was out of action due to injuries.

In recent years, the WBA crowned interim champions in countries like: Panama, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica and Peru among others. Currently the WBA has 36 reigning world champions in the 17 divisions in boxing.

In the end they amount to the same thing regardless of what they are called. Both the Wba and the Wbc have this emeritus thing. The Wbc invented the silver title or interim. Its bad enough to have 4 people claiming to be the real world champion in almost every division. In my mind there ought to be only one. 36 champions in 17 divisions is ridiculous and that's only one sanctioning body.

Devastated to hear this. We need more belts not less. It's not the winning guys, it's the taking part that counts.

I'd be happier with the elimination of all "junior weight classes"! If you weigh in at 142 your a welterweight! You don't drop 2 and be "super lightweight or junior welter" its garbage! Make the fighters weigh in at 8am the day of the fight and you'll see fighters very close to what they weigh in accordance with the class! Your not going to come in skelital then hydrate 20+ and have a day and 3/4 to do it in. If someone is giving up 6 to 8 pounds and thats a disadvantage just go home!! Tell me when 7pounds over rules talent? Ray

I don't mind the different weight divisions as it makes it more even and safer for the competitors. Plus 140 and 154 are great weight divisions.

They are great divisions but I don't see why they can't just be Welters & Middles. That way divisions would be even more stacked.

The lower weight divisions are stupid. There are 13 pounds between 5 weight divisions!!! Are they really required?

They aren't, as I said if your in at 54 you can weigh 58 and be a real middleweight! The juniors are to generate more titles that water down the sport! Everyones a title holder and there are NO number 1 and number 2 contenders!!! Ray
