Well that was pretty dumb. To show the level of commitment that Gandhi did requires an enormous amount of courage and balls, so much so that he realised and was completely aware that not everyone has such courage and so he suggested that not everybody would be able to or need to keep to non-violence.
"where there is only a choice between cowardice and violence, I would advise violence" is something he said as well as the more famous "an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind"
While his methods are not for everyone and like every human he was full of contradictions and some clearly unworkable ideas, a man who leads a great nation like India to independence from the British Empire is hardly a pussy. Violence against an island nation that had spent thousands of years honing its combat skills and training and amassing armed forces was hardly going to work for a largely unarmed country.
In his own way, he kicked serious ass.

I think Ben Kingsley played Ghandi better than Ghandi did. Ghandi was alright, he really did make that robe look good. My only critique of Ghandi is that he tried to embrace everything. When you embrace everything, you embrace nothing. My families from Ireland so anyone who pisses of the British Dandys, they are cool in my book.
