The great Toney shits all over Hopkins but that's just my opinion..

Good thing we're not talking about reigns at Lt hvy? Its a bit loaded, I give Toney credit for Holyfield and Peter 1 but other than that one guy keeps discipline, faces and breaks his own records with top competition and one who couldn't put the fork down and settled on going through the motions flaunting a mean set of moobs and embarrass himself.
Yeah I don't really understand the eternal love for James Toney. Hopkins would have pissed all over his chips if they'd ever fought IMO.
Not a fair assessment, Toney was a big super middleweight, hopkins was a middle weight and fought at middle pretty much his entire career, and for him to put on weight enough to jump to 175 he had to hire mackie, same guy that helped roy go up to heavy, so its not a fair comparison, period, and toney is a juicer so fuck him and any other boxer that jucies
No no no no. Never. IF Hopkins ever really thought he could, he would of gone through with the Maskaev fight some years back.
Toney had a phenomenal beard and the perfect style for a man with such a disparity in size...
Makes me wish Tyson had of changed up his style before he hit 30. Can you imagine!
But yes I think Hopkins would have just refused do 'play ball' if they ever fought each other. Toney needs someone a lot more 'honest' to look good against. The heavyweights were all far too slow to be 'cute'... Of course only until Toney lost it completely.

But James would still eat them, so what are you sayingHopkins would have needed a blind referee, imo. Within the rules of boxing he was not beating a prime James Toney at 160 pounds. Actually try and imagine Bernard winning that without excessive clinching, holding and hitting, using his head, etc.
Hopkins would not be able to beat Holyfield and Ruiz and is not a heavyweight at all. A more interesting question would be if they fought now at heavyweight who would win. Toney is slow but carries the weight, Hopkins would be considerably lighter.
Do not let success go to your head and do not let failure get to your heart.
Can Hopkins beat the heavyweights that James Toney fought??
Seriously?
Hopkins always came into the ring in shape. He didn't bloat up to 240+ pounds like a beached whale like Toney did. Neither of them belong at heavyweight. That Toney masqueraded as one says nothing. Hopkins showed respect for the sport by looking the part of a professional athlete, even if his style was boring and maddening. Toney was a fat-ass clown who couldn't say the alphabet without slurring.
What's the point of this thread, anyway?
There's no point, he's got verbal diarrhea and can't stop making thread after thread.
In all fairness to Toney, he said in 1991 that he would win the HW title by 2003. I don't think he bloated up at all; I think he was killing himself to make 160, 168, maybe even 175. At 217, against Holyfield, he was not bloated, moved great and was real sharp. I think he then got into the misguided notion that, to compete at that weight, he needed to bulk up.
Doing so cost him the advantages he had touted in 1991- his speed, his agility, being hard to hit, combination punching, and his superior boxing knowledge (courtesy of the great Bill Miller). Toney, at his best, was so far beyond Hopkins it is hard to even quantify. He'd make the fight, or encourage you to bring the fight to him and then make you pay for it.
Never beat against Hopkins, his manoeuvre margin might get slimmer and slimmer as time passes by but the man is hungry and has a willpower level beyond everything I've seen in Boxing. On paper, yes, he could.

That's the way it is, not the way it ends
I don't think I've ever seen Toney not look slightly bloated at any weight, certaintly never lean or tight at a weight.
