No one wanted to see any blacks esp after jack johnson thats why when joe louis came along he was more subservant to keep the peace.

Jack johnson was amazing as he was always himself in those dreadful fatal times.

Bit sad the irony that Johnson himself never defended his title against other blacks though, I can only imagine he didn't have much choice in the matter as they were always lining up the next white hope to beat him.

Jack johnson fought in the worst adversity any boxer has had in all boxing history.

He could have been killed after any of his fights.

Didnt they used to fight 20-30 rds back then?

Yes and sometimes even more rounds than that.

Jack Johnson was finally dethroned by a 26th round KO at 37+ years of age. Boggles the mind really.

Wasn't it Doc Kearns who stopped Dempsey from fighting blacks?

Actually just read up a little on Dempsey to check this. Apparently he was willing to fight Harry Wills and both men had in fact signed the contract, only a promoter never came through with his purse guarantee. I believe Dempsey had initially take the stance that he wouldn't fight blacks though, but who knows if he was told to say so for popularity etc. The other thing is that Dempseys reign came after the best crop of black Heavies were getting well long in the tooth anyways, which I hadn't realized. Even Harry Wills would have been pushing 35 by the time Dempsey was champion, which was ancient for a fighter in those days. Guys like Langford and Mcvey, Jeanette were completely worn out by the 20's etc. Dempsey also later stated he wouldn't have fancied fighting Joe Louis etc, who would have killed him.
