Jack johnson was amazing as he was always himself in those dreadful fatal times.

Wasn't it Doc Kearns who stopped Dempsey from fighting blacks?
Actually just read up a little on Dempsey to check this. Apparently he was willing to fight Harry Wills and both men had in fact signed the contract, only a promoter never came through with his purse guarantee. I believe Dempsey had initially take the stance that he wouldn't fight blacks though, but who knows if he was told to say so for popularity etc. The other thing is that Dempseys reign came after the best crop of black Heavies were getting well long in the tooth anyways, which I hadn't realized. Even Harry Wills would have been pushing 35 by the time Dempsey was champion, which was ancient for a fighter in those days. Guys like Langford and Mcvey, Jeanette were completely worn out by the 20's etc. Dempsey also later stated he wouldn't have fancied fighting Joe Louis etc, who would have killed him.
