Diaz is not only a real trainer, but a very good one. But you're underestimating Roach's role. Would Diaz have had Cotto come out with his old aggresion and vicious shots to the body? Diaz did admirably preparing Cotto for Margacheato and for Floyd. But would he have been as effective in getting last night's results out of Cotto? Food for thought.
Fair enough. Lets see if the old Cotto seek and destroy mission works beyond the likes of Rodriguez. To early to make that call. Like I said imo Delvin was the perfect opponent to look great with and I'm not sure Diaz would have done anything different once he studied the tape.
Yeah, one fight is too small a sample size to make a good judgement. It happened to work in this instance, but who knows when it comes to the next fight. It's easy to second guess Cotto's trainer moves, since he's made so many. But other than Joe Santiago, I think they've all worked out pretty good, for the most part.
Cotto is one of the very best fighters we have seen over the past decade and a bit. Nice to see a fighter's fighter doing his work.
If God wanted us to be vegetarians, why are animals made of meat ?
*U don't know what ur talking about, ..Rodriquez is a dangerous fighter, with skill... he's more of a gatekeeper than Journeyman, but make no bones about it, Rodriquez CAN fight. For Cotto to come in and beat a B fighter in Rodriquez is a serious statement. Rodriquez has been in withsome some serious comp as of late and had dedicated himself . ... it's a nice job by Cotto. i'd like to see Cotto do this again before I put him in with the best fighters, but early consensus is..HE'S BACK.
p.s U can say whatever, under Diaz lately, Cotto looked like a shot fighter...

wouldn't a Bronner vs Cotto fight be nice..
Does Cotto go for canelo at 154? Or move up to 160 and challenge Martinez?
Great question. I think the Pr/Mex thing make Alvarez the desired opponent and the money is probably much better based on that fact. Legacy wise I suppose you make a play for Martinez who is a small middle and held to be the man.
Makes sense and is still decent money with the added legacy. Alvarez really has not beaten anybody. Oh I'm sure the take would be huge but Cotto would be fighting in Alvarez a younger stronger version of himself. I'm also sure that thee resident problem will be quite sickened by this comparison. Frankly, I could give a shit. Tax man gets less coin with Martinez and he does something special.
It was a solid showing but I'd like to see Cotto, more so his people, keep a level head and rebuild steady at 154. At least another step before he thinks of a Alvarez...frankly Alvarez needs to reboot also. Cotto did exactly as he should have vs a slow starter with a leaky defense and a willingness to fight fire with fire but no way is he can he climb in a time warp and erase the wear and years. I think the Martinez thinking is a bridge too far for him, maybe a Trout rematch. Molina has a trinket that might make a good door prize is he tied to Showtime?
I love Cotto but people, chill. This fight is the perfect example why aggressive fighters are always over rated and boxers under rated. Aggressive fighters look great against inferior competition. I'll give you an example, Floyd is the best fighter in the world, does anyone think he would have dismantled Rodriguez in 3?
The good
They had a good gameplan for this fight.
Cotto got back to his bread and butter
Physically Cotto looked great
The bad
Cotto had made serious strides on defense, I'm not sure if it was the lack of respect for the opponent or how Roach completely ignores any work on defense but Cottos defense looked awful. If he had been in with a person fighting back he would have taken serious punishment because he was wide open.
My prediction
Cotto looks great unless he steps back up. If he steps up the competition he will look great for a few rounds but the typical Roach disregard for D will cost him. Cotto isn't durable enough for that. He'll start feeling the shots by round 4, slow the attack down and be in survival mode by round 9
I don't say this not to diss Cotto, he's a great champion who I have great respect for. But we've seen this rebirth meme played out a thousand times in boxing to sell the exciting fighters. It doesn't pan out, in the end they are what they are except more shop worn.
