I used to hate Hopkins and think that if Taylor did enough in the first fight to take it then Hop did enough in the second to get it back. What smaller men did he pick on after Taylor? Hopkins fought his career at middle and as a natural. The night of the fight he was within a few pounds of what he weighed in at.
The last guy to do that was probably Greb or Burley. Careful approach? He jumped two divisions at age 44 or whatever and smoked the man who beat the man. He then dropped down and embarrassed the next coming of Christ. You would judge the mans career on Calzaghe and Dawson? That is like me judging Calzaghe on Hopkins. Not all that enjoyable. Of course he's in it for the money. Larry Holmes fought Ali for the money. You disrespect a legend. Nobody cares what age he is. Are you serious?
Miles your rationale is severely flawed and twisted. B-hop losing a razor thin fight to Calzaghe means he's all smoke and mirrors? What about Pascal, Tarver and Cloud? All big and very capable top light heavies.
Idk how you can demean Hopkins while championing James Toney. I love both guys, but if anyone has been smoke n mirrors in recent years its been Toney not Hopkins.
Easy Calzaghe win, the only thing to dent it was Hopkins embarrassing himself with phantom low blows etc. Pascal and Cloud are top 10 guys, but they are so crude and limited and lose their big fights. Tarver was always overrated and barely has a dozen wins. He is one of those beat a legend people and that's about it.
I simply don't like how Hopkins fights. He clinches constantly and runs in like a billy goat. Now show me the last time James Toney ever tried to fight with those kinds of tactics. Toney is aesthetically pleasing, whilst Hopkins is not. Hopkins has done a lot more in recent years granted, but last weekends fight was a case in point. It was just horrible to watch and against the kind of opponent people picked on Calzaghe for all the time. Hopkins has loads of these on his resume, but gets a pass because he is old.
If you give a toss about Hopkins age, then you are clearly missing the point of boxing. It's simply about the performance. You cannot let someone cheat just because they are old.
