Here in Texas immigrant labor from Mexico (largely undocumented) is a vital part of our economy. They are generally family oriented, hard working people with a strong entrepreneurial drive. Unfortunately some of those positive traits fall off as they assimilate to the American culture. The issue is the drain on the welfare state. There is a real demand for the labor so if we removed the welfare state then open borders wouldn't be a problem. People would move freely for employment just like commerce but wouldn't be a drain on the social systems.

I'l have a look for something later VC. It's something I looked at for my MA.
It's mostly just Visa Overstayers of course but it creates an interesting point about the types of immigration people find palatable and why.
It is a side note really because that is referring to illegal immigrants, rather than the perfectly legal immigration this thread is condemning.
