In the end, it is a business and it's a hard way to make a living.

Fans "respect" guys who go out and make exciting fights and take risks, but you can't eat or drink respect, and respect doesn't put a roof over you and your family's heads.

It's the fighter's responsibility to make enough money to carry them into retirement, and also make sure they don't take too much punishment, so they can enjoy a good quality of life after they retire.

If seeing the fights you want not happening annoys you then you must be pretty pissed off with boxings every month

All of that is well and good. But in a sport that already seen a lot of fan interest erode, it is the "exciting fights" that help grow the sport.... which generates more money for the fighters..... which helps put a roof over their heads and plan retirement. If you add together the promoter spats, the ducking that occurs (both blatant and not-so-blatant), and all the other reasons why big fights don't materialize..... you have a lot of un-made big fights.

No one wants to see athletes get hurt to the point it affects their health or their quality of life. But the very nature of boxing is what it is. Two grown men whaling away at each other with not very nice intentions. We all enjoy the good knockout, or the "Gatti-Ward" fights.... but then we go totally the other way and decry the violence of it all. It's all a bit schizo, really.

Rather than excuse the lack of big, exciting fights and fighters ducking each other, we should concentrate on making the sport safer. Better equipment, better medical oversight at matches, better screening to allow fighters to climb back into a ring, more competent refs, etc., etc.

Not mad.. it's just irritating sometimes as a hardcore boxing fan since this is the only sport where the best dont always fight the best but at the end, I appreciate boxing for what it is. There are many great matchups below the elites so im not trippin..

Boxing doesnt revolve around just the few guys at the very top.. there are shitloads of great matchups if u know where to look..

You can add all of that but in the end the human brain isn't meant to be smashed repeatedly and you're still gonna end up with a lot of punchy dudes.

I don't feel like any athlete owes anyone excitement, whether it's fight sports, team sports, ect. All a boxer owes a fan is legitamite competition, meaning he's giving a real effort to win the fight. Any athlete's main goal going into a competition should be to win in a way that presents the least risk to their health and the least risk of losing.

When you pay to go to a sporting event, you're paying to watch a competition. That's all that's owed to you. You don't get a refund if you don't get to see a ton of homeruns, or cool slam dunks and buzzard-beating shots, or hail mary touchdown passes. You pay to see athletes competing and trying to win.

Boxing fans are the most unreasonable. They get indignant, especially on this board, and go "WE'RE THE FANS, WE PUT FOOD ON YOUR TABLE, GIVE US WHAT WE WANT NOW, HOW DARE YOU NOT GIVE US WHAT WE WANT, WE PAY YOUR SALARIES" like spoiled children. And we love to talk about how much more we respect warriors who go out and brawl and put on a show. But as soon as those guys are out of the sport or down on their luck, who looks after them?

When was the last Abdusalamov thread you saw? I have to do Google searches to find updates on his condition. He was a come foward, throw bombs and take bombs guy and everyone was ranting about how exciting his fight was. Now he's going to spend the rest of his life as a vegetable in all likelyhood. What does fan respect/sympathy do for him? His brain injury happened 2 months ago and he's been forgotton already.

Fuck the fans. Fight smart, hit and don't get hit and get your money.

^that's more aimed towards people getting upset at "boring" fighters. I'm not advocating ducking and dodging fighters, which is something I can't stand.
