you make a fair point... fres is older now and was never that great even in his younger days :S but he is skilled and has been winning fights recently and has been fairly active, wilder could fight a lot worse for sure.. i think this is the right way for wilder to go.. he needs to step it up but one thing at a time.. if he gets through oquendo he needs to keep upping the competition like this....
I'm looking forward to this onew will be interesting to see how he deals with a skilled guy
naw man that has nothing to do with it.. Even when he was young, I viewed him as nothing more than a fringe contender type, a stepping stone for the good prospects and contenders.
Just look at his history.. He couldnt even beat an ancient McCall, Holyfield and Toney.. Lost to a CW in Mormeck and got knocked out by Ruiz.. What more needs to be said?
He may not be shot like Liakhovich but he sure aint a better fighter than Liakhovich..
I would literally be shocked if Oquendo gave WIlder problems..
He was unlucky not to win the 3 fights in bold. If he got fair decisions hed be on a 13 fight winning spree. Never stopped early so hopefully hell give Wilder a few rounds. I reckon hell be stopped in the 5th or 6th but its better then his recent fights. Him and Liackhovic are similar standards, prime for prime, Liackhovic is better but he was completely shot when he fought Wilder so this does represent a step up
Oquendo is fairly decent, the Toney fight in particular was very close. He does nothing special, but has all the fundamentals in place. Against Windmill Man he could be surprisingly effective. I wouldn't rule Oquendo out at all.
Wilder has been on a bum of the month campaign since he started his career. This is actually a step up for him. It's extremely sad that it has taken so long, but finally a half decent fighter on a semi-decent run of form.
Wilder hasn't shown that he is top 10 material at all yet, and again, a further sad reflection on the padding of his rather woeful looking career record.
If I was Wilders promoter this is the kind of fight id take for Wilder. Id be keeping him away from a world title until at least the end of the year.
Fres Oquendo is a good fighter. He would beat everyone that Wilder has already faced. Hes good enough to at least trouble Wilder and make him learn. So fa in his career he hasnt learnt how to fight through being hurt and he will get hurt. He hasnt had to deal with anyone really throwing much back. Look how badly Price was moved. His level of opponent went static and plataued with Sexton, Harrison and Skelton then all of a sudden a huge jump to Thompson!
I can even see Oquendo beating Wilder. This is the first opponent he will have had that should be able to get past Wilders punches and give him something back. It will be interesting to see how Wilder reacts to pressure.
This is the perfect opponent for Wilder at this point and as long as he does actually win he will need another 1 or 2 opponents on this level before he thinks of challenging whoever is holding the belt when and if he ever gets there.
I thought Oquendo may have been Tyson Furys opponent for February. Lots of fun entertaining fights to be made at the moment. With all the good prospects coming theough all the older names will make some good fights.
