I agree that Floyd overspends but he isn't stupid with money. He will continue making money after boxing through promoting and investing. He may make bad life choices but that doesn't mean he is an idiot in all aspects of life. The only way he is going broke is through excessive gambling

Floyd is not going to wind up broke. He said, in a recent interview, he could stop boxing tomorrow and he would still have a weekly check coming in.
Anyone who thinks Floyd is stupid is the stupid one. He might not have the education some of us have but as far as intelligence goes, Floyd can run with the big boys.
Watch him during interviews, he doesn't get coaxed into saying anything he doesn't want to. If the question doesn't suit him, he steers the conversation in a different direction. I'm not saying he never makes a mistake or never gets pissed off or annoyed but he is normally poised and in control.

Now he doesn't. It took him damn near 15 years to finally learn not to run his mouth reckless

You figure Al Hayman sent him to interview school?
I doubt it too, when Floyd was younger he was playing the disrespectful "Pretty Boy Floyd", now he's older and morphing into "The Business Man".
    Floyd is a smart dude!

This article from a couple of weeks ago says otherwise. Worth more than Floyd

Can you sit back and imagine the comedy and luxury of the option to sell a "toy" in 1 day rather than busting your ass from sand to brick over 2, 3 years to say you've earned-cleared the same sum if you're lucky? I can't.

The idiot has a garage full. Guys like him fear not having enough bills to throw at a camera, and we're not talking gas, phone, and electric but not going bust. That'll be Broner who will be fronting with a stack on ones and wrapping his grill in aluminum foil on his burner phone when the end comes.

One of the key reasons is that they never actually have the money it's claimed they do. After taxes and payouts a 100M can become, 20 net pretty quick. If you spent like you had 100, you're screwed.

Evander Holyfield should be a lesson to all boxers. 100 bedroom house and 3 divorces, what a fool.

What rich boxers fail to realize, is the maintenance involved in such purchases you can't forget about those leeches (family members included) that drain you dry.

Having said that I think it’s a bit of an over-rated myth promoted by Hollywood about once great fighters who go broke when retired but when it does happen EVERYONE GETS TO HEAR ABOUT IT

    Even if not entirely true

Take Tito Trinidad, last we heard he was broke.

But truth is Tito Trinidad owns a huge chain of gas stations in Puerto Rico and continues to make money through small businesses but he did lose 60 million and now Trinidad is left with $9 million (aw poor Tito) in assets and about three times that in debts, according to boxing publication The Ring

Tito Trinidad reportedly broke after aide squandered $63 million - Ring TV

Everyone knows about the Joe Louis story (Who is the poster boy for broke fighters) and Leon Spinks and many others

Also, what do people mean by 'broke' ?

The only fighters I know who REALLY-REALLY went broke were the likes of Iran Barkley the previously mentioned Leon Spinks. You had others who ppl said went broke, Hitman Hearns, Riddick Bowe but you are hardly likely to see either of them on welfare.

I'm sure there are many once rich broke business men, Carl Schilling for example, from Boston Red Sox is broke right now cause he invested all 185 million on a company that went bankrupt and he lost it all.

You have to be smart with your money and not have bunch of morons advising you to do the wrong thing and living out of interest maybe sufficient for most people but people like boxers with their life style may not be enough, they sometime spend more than they will earn out of interests and plus most fighters are hugely generous, Tommy Hearns gave away millions to family and friends as did Ali and Roberto Duran

Likewise there are many singers and actors who have gone broke but you don't here the same hoop-la about them.

IMO - There are more fighters who are doing well - financially - after retirement

    • Lennox Lewis.
    • Ike Quartey.
    • Larry Holmes.
    • Roy Jones.
    • David Haye.
    • Vitaly Klitschko.
    • My man Ronald 'Winky' Wright is doing good and he was semi-retired for years before he really retired.
    • Micheal Soinks.
    • George Foreman.
    • Joe Calzaghe.
    • Nigel Benn.
    • Steve Collins.
    • Humberto Soto (He has taken all his purses over the years and owns a fleet of transit buses in his hometown in mexico. I heard on a telecast he has expanded it substantially) Jameel McCline (He has also done well too I read. He chose to come out of retirement to see if he still had it. He got a few fights in but clearly needed to go back into retirement. he lost to)
    • Steve Collins.
    • Naseem Hamed (Prince Naseem is loaded. Invested in property in Sheffield and oil from his heritage in Yemen.
    • Gerry Cooney

Each of them could easily afford to give me or you $50 grand and not want it back

But boxers being financial shrewd with their money does is not sexy and does not trigger any stereotype that people have of boxers

As for Mayweather. He does have a lot of hangers on but I think he has made too much money to go broke. He will be well off for life. He only fights for big money and not chump change due to his understanding of his ability to generate revenue like no other in the sport.

Plus, I think all his seemingly reckless spending is a big ol facade to the public (he is "Money May" right?). Floyd is more business savvy then many give him credit for.
