I feel bad being so negative because Cotto looks great.

Wow. Cotto is a brutal fucking bastard when he wants to be. Superb performance. That was career defining start to finish.

In a historial look at the boxrec record it is. But he beat up an invalid. He'll still lose to Mayweather again, even Alvarez when he eventually fights him. Watch him call Mayweather out.

I was terribly off on this one. Cotto was sharp. Never would have imagined Cotto had the faster hands. But Sergio took to long to get his feet under him to throw. Wide step with the lead foot, can't punch. Wide step with the trail foot, finally he can. Too late.

Martinez has never recovered from the 12th round of the Chavez fight

You could see from the off that Martinez had little movement and that he had no way fight in his usual style. In fact, I don't think Martinez should have been fighting seeing how weak his movement was. His style is all about being unorthodox, with movement, and landing hard shots with the power from the legs. I don't think I saw a power shot land. I don't give Cotto much credit for that, he picked his way to a title, and most would look good against this 39 year old Martinez.

Step up Cotto and beat a fighter in his prime for ooh maybe the first time in half a decade. I feel sorry for Martinez, but he shouldn't have fought. He must have known his condition, he is smart. Little credit for that.

If you fight you get paid, and I don't blame him for grabbing this last payday.
I didn't see the fight but from what you guys described, Martinez was dead in the water, no steering, no power, and no fuel.
I'll remember him the way he looked In the second Williams fight.
Good for Cotto, I hope he makes the the most of his win.
I like both those fighters and wasn't looking forward to seeing either one of them losing.

For sure, you fight to get paid, and I don't have an issue with that. It was just a shock to see how bad Martinez looked. Martinez literally had no legs and I presume the Cotto team knew that would be so. That first round was odd, he had no coordination in those legs, and it just looked wrong.

Fair play to Cotto looking sharp and making no mistakes, but I don't think Martinez would have looked even average against most top fighters in this state. It was very apparent how much those legs have meant to his career. A year is a long time and in boxing terms a year is a lifetime and multiple surgeries and age is the story of this fight rather than Cotto being a new MW superhero.

I think it's safe to say Martinez was not at 100% without shitting all over Cotto's superb effort. No one forced Sergio to take the fight. In all appearances leading up to the fight, Sergio pronounced himself much more ready physically than for the Murray fight. True, there's gonna be a bit of "poker hand" playing in there... but he didn't come into the fight on crutches. And Cotto didn't punch Martinez in the knee. He beat the shit out of him in the very first round. It was clear that Martinez was not expecting to be hit that hard by Cotto. Miguel employed every tool in his arsenal. Power, speed, boxing skills... everything. And credit must be given to Roach. He appears to be getting the best out of Cotto, whose career has been revitalized.

It's too damn easy to dismiss a fighter's great moments by trashing the quality of the other guy. But Sergio is a full-blown middleweight, with the speed and the power to have knocked out many a fellow middleweight. Yes... he's near the end of his career. Yes, his knee has never been the same. This is hardly Cotto's fault. As for Cotto "picking"... give me a break. You can make just as much a case for Martinez picking. Cotto is a welterweight body fighting in the middleweight division. And yet he showed the power to hurt a Sergio that has been hit by much bigger guys.

So how about a bow to both guys? Sergio showed nothing but class after the fight, refusing to blame his knee. Instead, his cornerman did it for him. Yeah... the knee acted up on him. Probably helped along by the barrage of punches Cotto rained on him from the very first round.
