Manny and Margarito hit him clean....

And, yea! His footwork was pretty decent.

Well no shit they did. Obviously. Further proving my point.

BEFORE Roach, he was doing the retreating n covering up with his right only while turning away, thus being pummelled in that stance.

NOW he doesn't do that. Big improvement.

Exactly. All the more reason to admire someone like Cotto. He's shown the ability to learn and adjust his style throughout his career. He's fallen into some bad habits, but has listened to his trainers and made the necessary adjustments. All his trainers have had nothing but good things to say about his work ethic and his ability to learn. I thought Pedro Diaz did wonderful things with Cotto at that stage of his career. And now Roach has come in with his own style and beliefs... and he's getting the most out of Cotto. The only glitch which I never understood was when Cotto went with Joe "WTF" Santiago, which of course made no sense... but I think Cotto was in a stage of his life where he thought he could train himself. It took him awhile before he figured out you have to let the trainer be the boss.
