I call it retreating and it's OK if you throw scoring punches while you retreat.
Ali was a master at scoring while he gave away ground, especially early in his career. I can still see that prick leading guys around the ring peppering them with with every punch he had and talking trash to them at the same time. Man, that guy used to piss me off.

Look this running crap is over the top. Boxers and technicians are penalized for using boxing and technique while plodding neanderthals get points for plodding forward. Thats junk science not sweet science. You dont have to sit and trade in a phone booth. They have a ring to use it and the idea is to hit and not get it and that entails using the damn ring. I swear to god that this sport is devolving at a rate that is unprecedented.

Running is mental as well as physical. Inactivity, unwillingness or smoke n' mirrors with the hands etc. Guys who throw a lead literally designed to get them to another part of the ring on follow-through momentum. Or

The ref would have given you a couple of warnings and then DQ'ed you.
Retreating is OK, refusing to fight isn't.

Marquez wanted so bad for gainer to throw something he could counter, he did everything but throw the left hand for him. And Gainer fought an absolute war with Kevin Kelly.

Preach on. The supposed boxing fan of today should quit pretending, skip the matches and go to a cock fight.

I agree with you guys. The best boxers with the best skill get shunned while fighters who love to eat punches like Provo and Rios get all the credit. Bullshit. I appreciate a good war but what Lara and Floyd and Rigo do is what boxing is. Hit and don't get hit.

Provo deserves better than to be lumped in with a guy who goes out of his way to "love being hit" and was gifted against the same style that Provo shouldered losses against, minus the bs favoritism of promotion. Not to mention he actually trains and makes weight

I don't think Lara 'runs'. He fights in spots, he looks like a cutey/spoiler.

Imagine Pep or Locche fighting today? They wouldn't win a fight. To much use of the ring.Leonard could not fight another round in the Hagler fight. His legs were gone. Leonard had ring size written into the contract. Imagine if Hagler got the 117/111 card? That would not have happened because it was Leonard who was the "star" so his "running" was different lol.

Ring size to anyone who has boxed or followed the sport is a big deal and if the reasons for that need to be explained then suffice it is to say that the person having it explained to them might want to start following another sport. The difference for instance between an 18 foot ring and a 20 is night and day. Fights can have dramatically different conclusions because of that two feet. Only an Alvarez lap dog would accuse Lara of running or being a chickenshit.

Its lunacy not to expect a boxer/counter puncher who operates out of a defensive set not to use the ring. How about we just ditch the thing and bring in a 4 x 8 like this

Tie a string around it and if a guy breaks it he's disqualified.

Someone has to make the fight. The aggressor will always be the chaser. Nearly 90% of Mike Tyson's opponents could be considered "runners".

With Floyd Mayweather, he is a runner, but he at least counter-punches off of his running. You just can't follow Floyd around and land shots with nothing in return.

Run or no run, Oscar was cheated of his win of Trinidad. Simple. No trying to give explanations for shit and corrupt judges. Oscar was just flat out robbed. No excuses.
    Bigger man George, bigger punch!

To me the difference between a "runner" and a "mover" is that a runner is using movement just to survive and remove himself from danger. Running is what Oscar did vs Tito in the last three rounds. It's about survival, and nothing else. That doesn't mean a runner necessarily gives away rounds, but when things get hot the runner gets on his bicycle.

A mover is a guy who uses his movement for both defence and offence. The mover will slip or step back from danger, use movement to keep his opponent from getting set, but is also simultaneously looking to set up his own offence, usually a counter punch.

There is a lot of crossover: sometimes a mover will run from a situation, and sometimes a runner will look to set up offence. But I think when you watch a guy you can understand his mentality and get a feel for his style. Runners have the "danger danger, escape this situation and get to a more neutral position" mentality, and movers have the "let me change the range/angle and see if it can be more advantageous to me" mentality.

Best example is Floyd. People accuse him of being a runner, which I just don't agree with. Floyd will get on his bicycle on occasion, but more often than not he uses his movement to set up a counter, to set a trap.

There is an art to both, however I think the mover best exemplifies what boxing is about and uses his movement more efficiently.

And of course, sometimes it's best to just run.

That's how I always saw it.

Floyd will turn the tables and walk you down...Lara NEVER does that.
