When Floyd Jr was a toddler, he was used as a human shield himself.

Everyone knows old Floyd Sr's story of getting shot in the leg while he was holding baby Floyd Jr, but that old con-artist doesn't tell it straight.

When old Floyd Sr thought he might get shot by his brother-in-law over drug deals and debts, Floyd Sr decided to pick up his son baby Floyd in an effort to save his own mangy old carcass. The shooter shot anyway, hitting Sr but missing his young nephew Floyd Jr.
Floyd Sr was a coke trafficker who eventually got busted, convicted, and sentenced to 5 years, and his former wife is a coke/crack addict.

The point being, any decent man's/father's priority is their child's safety first. In a dangerous situation, most guys would try to bargain to at least allow their defenseless child to leave the room and the danger.
