As I have mentioned prior I have worked in the medical field for over twenty years. Mostly on the Mental Health side of things. During that time I have worked in the US prison system so I do have first hand knowledge on the subject but of course I have only worked in three prisons so I can't speak for them all. I can say that I bet many of you would be surprised of the opportunities available to a large majority of prisoners. We have teams of people employed in the system who's job it is to secure housing, employment and medical care post incarceration. The mental health wards I've worked on do a lot to assist inmates. Many inmates fake various forms of mental illness in hopes of getting housed in a mental health unit. Fortunately we do a decent job with the vetting process and try our best to make the help available to those who really need it.

In the US it is quite common for inmates to serve much less than half their imposed sentences with time of for good behaviour and other incentives. I am always well liked by the inmates as most of them know my contempt for authority is equal to there's. Sex crimes do happen in prison but it is not as common as society thinks it is. There are always inmates who use their homosexuality as a business venture or they simply get and give as much ass as they can during their stay.
Let me be clear, prison sucks. When I have worked in them I go out of my way to bring some laughter and break a few minor rules for the inmates. Don't get me wrong, there are some sick bastards who have earned life sentences and I'm sure there are some US prisons that are horrible but I can tell you for where they are at, many of these guys are being treated quite fairly and oddly enough they will go out of there way to tell you such things in conversation.

I will stop now but not before I say I think the US locks too many people up, I am stoically against the death penalty no matter what the crime and I have met non violent drug offenders who got life sentences which I feel is a miscarriage of justice.

In addition, Russian jails are thousands of times worse than ours, you don't need to do much research to back that up

    Walrus,

Would you agree with the death penalty if it was someone close to you that was killed/raped/abused?

Getting life for drug offences is harsh imo but then some would counter that arguement and say that those drugs would potentially cause misery for many more..

Have you worked in british jails?

I know that is a question always posed to those against the death penalty. I haven't been in that situation but I think my convictions are strong enough where they hold true. Firstly, I don't think the government should have the power to take someone's life, secondly, I think the system is too imperfect to trust with such a task. No, I never worked in UK jails, only here in my home country of the US. I should also point out I worked in the prison system for about four years and I now work with prisoners post release, I don't work the incarceration side any longer.

There is the age old argument of rehabilitation vs punishment, but after that post I am certain you will have some anecdotes to post, if you care to do so.

I could probably come up with some anecdotes but remember I worked as medical personnel so I could always get away with being much more kind than the guards. I will try to relate a few tales a bit later if the conversation continues
