I don't completely disagree with him. If you were to take a white American who had the exact same record and was world champion at this age, he'd be a lot more well known outside of boxing no matter how shitty and narrow minded a person he was. I think it's a little bit wishful or naive to pretend that isn't true.
What is more important though; and what obviously doesn't register with old Hopkins, is that he gets a lot less respect than he would in no small part because he comes up with stuff like this every other time you put him behind a mic. If there were a white Bernard Hopkins, he'd basically be some Aryan Brotherhood thug who was on record saying he'd never lose to a black man and that they are holding him back. ...well to be quite honest I'm afraid of giving Bernard Hopkins the proper credit and attention he deserves because he's not white.
As the average boxing fan my friends and I have always been able to avoid giving proper attention and credit to black and non white fighters as the "Old Boys Club" of boxing has always been the sport of the white man....much like Ice Hockey and NASCAR. But now with Bernard Hopkins FINALLY at the peak of his career, the prime of his life, being able to be the first black man to ever win a boxing match in the history of the sport....I have to tell you, I am absolutely terrified of it.
But I guess all us white people have to come to terms.....we no longer own the entire sport of boxing......what will we lose next the NBA?!?!?!?!
