    Fight of the day

    1995: Frankie Liles vs Mauricio Amaral






    1919: Tommy Loughran KO 2 Eddie Carter, Philadelphia. Loughran’s pro debut.

    1927: Jack Delaney KO 6 Paul Berlenbach, Chicago.

    1932: Kid Chocolate W 15 Fidel LaBarba, NYC. Retains New York World Featherweight Title.
    “In 15 rounds of boxing packed with scintillating ringwork, both defensive and offensive, and carrying the added thrill of a champion almost toppled off his throne, Chocolate emerged with the decision over little LaBarba. The majority of the 14,000 who witnessed the battle however disagreed.” Two judges gave it to Chocolate while the referee made it a draw.
    The New York Times.

    Fight of the day. Big day so here are two


    1958: Archie Moore KO 11 Yvon Durelle.


    1994:Felix Trinidad vs Oba Carr



    1923: Gene Tunney W 15 Harry Greb, NYC. Retains US Light Heavyweight Title. Referee: Lou Magnolia.
    The consensus was that Tunney won 9 rounds, Greb four, and two were even. Tunney mounted a body attack that allowed him to dominate the fight from rounds 8 to 14. The first seven rounds were evenly fought and Greb rallied strongly to win the 15th. Greb landed many more punches but Tunney’s were harder and cleaner. There were no knockdowns. The 3rd fight between these two.
    Harry never asked for no damn catchweight when fighting this all time great light hev that was 25 years ahead of his time.

    1934: Barney Ross W 12 Bobby Pacho, Cleveland. Retains World Super Lightweight Title.

    1951: Harold Johnson W 10 Archie Moore, Milwaukee. Johnson ends Moore’s 25-fight unbeaten streak.

    1958: Archie Moore KO 11 Yvon Durelle, Montreal. Retains World Light Heavyweight Title. Moore is down 3-times in the first and once in the 5th. Moore fought his way back, and broke Young Stribling’s knockout record (126), by stopping Durelle in the 11th-round.

    1960: Benny Paret W 15 Federico Thompson, NYC. Retains world Welterweight Title.

    1965: Emile Griffith W 15 Manuel Gonzalez, NYC. Retains World Welterweight Title.

    1966: Horacio Accavallo W 15 Efren Torres, Buenos Aires. Retains WBA Flyweight Title.

    Tito v Carr was excellent boxing. Watched Carr v Livingston Bramble recently good fight as well.

    Yup. It was right about that time or shortly after that he started to plod in looking to land the shot and fell in love with his power. His old man was just as much to blame. Problem is it worked 95% of the time. Oscar should have been a message to Tito to fire dad.

    When I was a kid i loved little Red lopez, while my mother was a huge Chacon fan. For many years after those two fought I hated chacon, but I came to have all the respect in the world for his heart and courage. Limon, too. Those two, plus Arguello and Boza-edwards, some great fights.
    I'd have loved to have been there for loughran v Slattery.
