I always wondered if a boxer could chew gum, it's been one of the great mysteries to me about this sport, along with the question of has any boxer ever earned a shaver??

Which of the 2, though, would you give the nod to? Gum or shaver?

@brocktonblockbust you know brother on a serious note gum used to be thought as a jaw muscle strengthener and is still used an awful lot of fighters for that belief. I have never seen a study on the effects but I just had a flashback of an extremely sore jaw from stuffing ten double bubbles in my mouth as a kid on a weekly basis. I'm still addicted to that shit which are now 5 cents, half the size and no freakin comic.

Floyd goes through an awful pile of gum in training and everyday life. There is a jaw muscle so there must be some basis in fact that it can be strengthened from use? A guy should hire a couple of hookers and put them into boxing to test the theory. I've never seen gum chewing in the corner or in a fight. You got one minute so the second isn't passing the fighter a stick of Wrigleys.
Plus I'm not sure how you would chew it wearing a mouth guard and there would also be a little worry about choking to death in the attempt. Also, what would happen when you got hit with a shot mid chew. Be like Ali getting caught by Norton mid sentence

That has to be right up there among the dumbest boxing beliefs ever, any boxer who does that is borderline retarded. Having strong jaw muscles isn't going to do shit to absorb a punch, you don't get knocked out because your jaw moves, it's your brain moving in your skull that makes the lights go out.

Rocky "My Boy" Marciano used to eat 25 pounds of tough steaks, he's ask the butcher for the worst cuts, tough as cartilage and nerves and sinew, and chew the shit out of it for 2 weeks beofre each fight, strengthening his jaw muscles. He's suck out all the juices and spit out the grizzle. said it took him 45 minutes a night, for 14 straight nights before the fight, I kid you not.

In over 150 years of prizefighting, somebody has HAD TO HAVE earned a shaver at some point. To think otherwise would be naive IMO
