I think this thread is a bit of an exaggeration. Shaver caught him good and he was hurt but after only a few seconds while his legs were still weak he didn't seem in much danger.

I thought he was in worse shape in round 14.

I was at Madison Square Garden that night.

You could hear the 'thud' from Earnie's right-hand, it echoed.

I'm sure Muhammad's brain was 'dislodged' from those right-hands in Round 2.

The first one was huge no doubt. But Muhammed has great recuperative powers. He wasn't steady. My point is simply it doesn't appear to me he was ready to go without a combination landing after. As I recall in 14 he looked like one more good shot could end it.
