Hes clearly a great fighter. You dont rack up 30 odd wins as a pro and an amateur rec like his being shit. As for being an all time great only time will tell. He doesnt need Ward to become an all time great but he needs a lot of big career wins. His main problems are the best at 160 wont fight him. Quillin and Cotto dont want anything to do with him. That seems pretty clear. His next problem, the rest of the division is no use at the moment. Lee, Murray, Ndam, Geale etc are all decent fighters but none are near elite. In fact there is no one in the Middleweight division that he will beat that will make me think hes an all time great. Even devasting KO wins over Quillin and Cotto will not make me think that as I dont think either are that good. Quillin isnt a special fighter in my view and Cotto is no middleweight.
So he really does have to move weight classes or wait around and hope some star comes through the MW rankings. So moving down would me my choice if I was him. The elite fighters are all 147 - 154 at the moment and Alvarez at 154+ would be a good fight. As would fights against Floyd, Lara or Andrade, or even a Charlo. His problem here is I dont think any would take the fight with him.
So that leaves stepping up to 168. Chavez is big cash fight but Chavez is nothing special and at 168 youd imagine Chavez having massive weight advantage at the night. This makes the fight interesting for me but again winning it doesnt sky rocket him to ATG level. Abraham and Froch would be massive in Europe but again as both were so comfortably beat by Ward that beating them and not fighting Ward doesnt mean much to me.
So that pretty much leaves Ward (who I still have plenty of questions about). This is a fight I want to see but not at 168. Id prefer to see it at a catchweight of 164. Meet halfway and fight at a neutralish venus of Vegas or New York. Ward in my view hasnt proved himself as an all time great. Hes a terrific fighter but his career defining wins are a TD over Kesseler in a fight where the ref was shocking, a KO win over a poor weight drained Dawson and a good UD over Froch. Non of which are much more imressive then GGGs win over Murray last night imo.
