That's blood from Kirkland's mouth that somehow instantly spurted out and deposited itself on his left bicep on his way down.

EDIT. His mouth made contact with his arm on the way down. He's lucky his torso took almost the full force of the fall cos if he'd gone head first into the canvas it could have been bad for him.
