I hate that he's referred to as 'The Greatest' when he's not even close. For the time he was unique, and he was full of personality and was great for boxing, but its like saying Oscar was the best ever. Good fighter, but get outta here with 'The Greatest'.

In 'all' cases, it is the voice {an opinion} of others to call somebody great.

I think Ali is #1 because his skills were top notch and I think he beat the best competition of all time. I don't see how Joe Louis was any more skilled than Ali and he certainly never beat the caliber of opponent Ali did.

I think Ali is overrated as a person though. People talk about him like he was a hero to dodge the war... but the fact was he only ever spoke out against the war when he was FORCED to join the service or go to jail. When he was safe and deemed "unfit" for service, he didn't stand up against the war for those who were being sent over. So I think his actions were much more self serving than consensus believes.

He was a great personality but he was also a jerk, easily manipulated and used as a puppet by the N.O.I.

Louis was vulnerable to a boxer ask Billy Conn. Ali was bigger and better than Conn.

Holmes had a great jab but that would not be enough to beat Ali.
