Dedication doesn't solely apply to training. A lot of fighters simply refused to expand their skillset.

    Jermaine Taylor
    Kelly Pavlik

but again, Pavlik and Taylor would both balloon up in weight, and Pavlik was a know alcoholic, on top of what you just mentioned, but at least Taylor made a half assed effort in trying to expand by picking up Steward as his trainer, even though he never bothered to try and actually learn something from him despite the fact that his style should have been a perfect fit for it, excellent long stiff jab, good right hand and a good uppercut, but he was well as the thread states, lazy

Pavlik always had that trailer park trash look about himself. He must have really been draining a lot of fifths for it to affect his boxing career.

James Toney was not undedicated and he did not rely on talent. What you saw in the ring were skills taught to him, over many many hours of very hard work, by Bill Miller. His rise to heavyweight was a planned thing; he said in 92 or 93 that he would be HW champion by 2004. The only time his dedication can be questioned is when his weight got out of hand after Holyfield, and that was arguably a mistake in judgement, thinking being heavier would help him.

Is there any body here who didn't immediately think of Ricky Hatton when they saw this thread?

    Later in Career,

    Muhammad Ali was 'milking it'.

There was no dedication into putting in the effort to come into the Ring in fine shape.

At first, I thought the thread was titled "Most un-educated fighters". Surely the topic would have been 15 pages long by now...

Roberto Duran was a notorious party animal who ballooned up between fights even more than Hatton. The great Ray Arcel resorted to actually locking him into his training camps.

Kirkland Laing was a rasta who loved weed and booze, he could have been a great

Stanley Ketchell would habitually escape from his camp to shag local women. Ended up being shot and killed by the irate husband of one of his conquests

Tyson was addicted to drugs and sex for most of his career and certainly didn't dedicate himself to being the best he could be once it all soured on him

There are a whole pile of blubbery heavyweights who should be ashamed to call themselves athletes

As a counterbalance, there have also been fighters who were totally dedicated to training ferociously, Marvin Hagler and Rocky Marciano spring to mind. Floyd Mayweather also clearly doesn't cut any corners in training ever.

The Great John L. Sullivan had to be locked away in training camp because of his love of whiskey

You know on the surface this may not look right but if you really think about it, especially for those of us that witnessed those times, Jimmy Young.
