If Paul Williams had gotten trained by Manny Steward early on in his career he would have been damn near unbeatable. His height, his frame, his stamina, his chin (which was great but got used too often and he left himself open vs Martinez specifically because he trusted his chin too much), he had good hand speed, so-so power. At 147 who was going to beat him had he fought like Tommy Hearns?
Absolutely! I think Meldrick Taylor is one of the best examples of that...blazing handspeed, great defense....but a cutesy style wasn't in his heart, he was a Philly fighter and wanted to fight a face first style.....he could have been Floyd Mayweather Jr before Floyd Mayweather Jr. laced up the gloves.
Absolutely....but had Taylor BOXED which is what he was bloody brilliant at he would have schooled Chavez and gone on to be an All-Time great, no doubt in my mind. But like I said, that style which was very effective for him, was one he was TAUGHT it wasn't in his heart and some fighters fight with their hearts over their brains and to be honest I think it's a mistake for any fighter to trust one too much over the other.
That one fight ruined Taylor, but that style was how he wanted to fight in his heart.
Was gonna say George Foreman too, I wouldn't call cutting off the ring good foot work. More of ring generalship.During his comeback lateral movement wasn't happening, that was just him moving his upper body side to side. Straight forward like a bulldozer.
