Wow that is gold! That fight was free but would have been worth millions if it happened in the professional arena.
Do not let success go to your head and do not let failure get to your heart.
Excellent find!!
Pryor was all over Hearns on that one. Thomas looked pretty amateurish with those wild shots and arm punches. Obviously he was vastly improved by the time he got to the pro ranks and had his epic fights. Would've been interesting to see them meet in the ring as polished pros.
Great fight! Thanks for sharing.
That's a little gem there, helluva fight alsoHard to imagine being 17 and having the storm of Pryor coming at you! Amateur boxing when it meant something
That's a beautiful thing right there Andre. I would have been 5 years old when this happened, so can not pretend to remember it, but it does call to mind the World of Sport and Grandstand coverage here in Britain during that time, thru to the early eighties. Sometimes it would be delayed coverage of a Big fight in America from the night before, or live Amateur stuff from this side of the pond etc.
I love the contrast and mini celebration of difference that this represents. The American and British Co commentators being so distinct and better for it. For us even relatively recently back then in the 70's America was still very exotic and remote, the land of Cowboys, and being both real and hyper real at the same time, with Jeans and Disneyland.
I love that fact that Hearns, still far from the fighter he would become, reverts to street fighter in the final round a bit, and it keeps Pryor honest. The genuine congratulations at the end, the non stop action, nice mix of styles, it's just a great nine minutes.
Thanks for sharing
