Fair point. If you think Kovalev hammered Hopkins whereas Calzaghe struggled with him and there was only a few years difference , then fair enough.
And Calzaghe would be up against it as he was a natural SMW and Kovalev is a natural LHW , maybe bigger.
Similar to why I think Calzaghe would beat GGG .

    Fuck off!

Calzaghe beat fighters that would beat Golovkin.

    No contest.

GGG would get strait shut out by a prime Calzaghe he is huge compared to GGG and has reach on him. Also he is faster he would destroy GGG would be a repeat Lacy pretty much as i see it. There a reason GGG not moving up and stays in the baron waste land of the division he is in now.

Note to North American friends - Calzaghe did exist before he turned 36. I know right??

Not putting the blame on you for not being aware of him, but just make a note that perhaps his physical peak was behind him by Lacy, and even further by Jones, Hopkins. People talk like that was a prime Calzaghe. Not at all. Compare like for like or state that your comparing prime GGG vs Old Man Joe....or else

Can't blame North Americans though because before then he hadn't fought anyone

Joes talent-accomplishment gap is the greatest in the sports history(not counting guys that died or were injured ending their careers) as far as I'm concerned. He was so damn good but he didn't fight people that were also good. GGG before GGG

Calzaghe goes down in the 4th but wins the fight over 12 with his jab, movement, speed and superhuman combinations. Tricky early on but easier and easier as Golovkin wears down from the pace.

If Golovkin won't fight Ward he wouldn't have fought Joe either.

Joe was a massive supermiddle, bigger frame, reach and granite chin and would have comprehensively outboxed Golovkin.

Yup, but the most important part is that Joe would never have fought GGG because Calzaghe was a massive pussy and never took a risk in his entire career and why is that? Well RJJ & Hopkins damn near beat him when they were ANCIENT......so yeah, although Calzaghe was a very accomplished fighter and one of the best super middleweights of recent memory he was also not about to leave the comfy confines of England to go fight someone MORE accomplished than himself until he was absolutely certain he was going to win. Same could be and should be said about Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Struggled with him is a bit of an understatement, I still think that's about as hard a fight to score as there is, and I don't think there was that much difference in Hopkins form. Some, but not immense.
