From the age of 3 I was obsessed with Queen, I mean full on obsessed, I point blank refused to listen to anything else...other than David Bowie (Ziggy Stardust) and that was only because he did Under Pressure, therefore I classed him as a friend of the band.
At the age of 11 I think it would have been, I heard Live Forever by Oasis, that changed my life, all of a sudden I had 2 bands in my life, Queen and Oasis, listening to interviews with Oasis in the early days it was Beatles this, Beatles that, Lennon = God etc
When my mom and dad left for work in the morning whilst I was getting myself ready for school I thought I would go crazy and see what was so great about these beetle dudes, I put revolver on, my head just wouldn't acclimatize to it, I mean Tomorrow Never Knows, Eleanor Rigby, Love You To, it ain't the sort of thing you expect a 12 year old to get.
I persevered with that album for fucking ages and just couldn't get it, at the time in my head it was obviously their best album purely because of the cover, I mean Rubber Soul, Abbey Road etc just looked boring (we didn't have Sgt Peppers on CD)
After about 2 months of trying to force myself to enjoy Revolver I thought I'd stick Abbey Road on...FUCK ME did my whole world changed within the space of 4 songs, Come Together, Something, Maxwells Silver Hammer, Oh Darling, I was fucking hooked, Revolver made sense, Oasis made sense, Queen made sense, Bowie made sense, the fucking universe itself made sense, I was fucking blown away, by the end of the 4th track I had to go to school, I couldn't get it out of my head, I couldn't tell my mom n dad that I was listening to it, that was embarrassing ''Oh by the way mom, dad, I've been listening to that old shit that you have on CD'' I thought I would have been laughed out of the house
I used to practically push my mom out of the front door in the morning so I could blast the first 4 tracks of Abbey Road, then I managed to hit the skip button and slowly worked my way through the rest of the album, then I did Revolver (properly) and then Rubber Soul, then A Hard Days Night etc, about 12 months later my dad said 'you should listen to The Beatles if you like Oasis so much, at this point it was just a thing, before school it was Beatles time, it was my time, I just said 'oh I do, I always listen to them' he just shrugged his shoulders and walked off.
Once I'd exhausted The Beatles I worked my way around everyone, The Kinks, The Small Faces, Dusty Springfield, The Who, The Beach Boys, at this time I was getting into the heavier stuff in a big way as well Zeppelin, Sabbath etc
All in all without The Beatles I probably would have got sucked into that black hole of music that is dance or trance or whatever, yeah The Beatles made me an outcast at school cuz I never got Alice Deejay or ATB - Till I come, but where music was concerned I was the happiest outcast around.
I'm 32 now and The Beatles are still number 3 on my most played bands on Last FM (number one is the Drive By Truckers, number two is Nick Cave)
Oh Queen is fucking epic! Bowie was amazing, The Kinks, hell the entire British Invasion of the 1960's was amazing so much talent!
Spencer Davis - Gimme Some Lovin' is one of the greatest individual records ever made. By the way, Steve Winwood, AMAZING talent so underrated.
I disagree slightly there El Kabs, anyone who knows anything about music classes Stevie Winwood pretty highly, I mean just listen to the Blind Faith album, if you can listen to Blind Faith live at Hyde Park, it's fucking great, I certainly don't think he's underrated amongst the crowd that matters.
I suppose you could say the same about Paul Rogers the people who know music know how good he is the people who don't know music don't know him but they don't matter.
I also remember when I was at school and we were going through the obligitury music history and the the teacher asked the class to name all 4 of the beatles, fucking smug she was, of course everyone got Lennon, McCartney and old Dingo Starr, no one knew poor old George, so I called out from my seat 'George Harrison' she looked shocked and said well done.
Next question she asked was 'can anyone name a Beatles song' of course the odd person in the class called out 'let it be' yellow submarine' hard days night' and all the songs that everyone knows, once everyone was scratching their heads I called out 'Blue Jay Way' teacher looked at me and said 'no Lee that isn't a Beatles song' so I called out 'I've just seen a face' she didn't even answer me, someone called out 'HEY JUDE' teacher clapped like a fucking seal 'well done yes thats a beatles song' so I called out 'Rocky Racoon' she didn't answer me, someone else called out 'IMAGINE' she jumped up and down and said 'YES WELL DONE'
I shouted out 'Blue jay way is off the magical mystery tour album and I've just seen a face is off the Help album...and imagine isn't even by the fucking beatles'
she told me to stand outside for the rest of the lesson...I was probably about 14 at the time, I knew more about music than the person teaching me music.
yeah this is the same school that shouted at me for reading a book.
completely off subject I know but I've had a wee drink so I'm gunna have a ramble as well
I get rather possessive over music, I don't begrudge anyone professing to be a big Beatles fan or Queen fan but it really fucks me off these days when you get the greatest hits fans, music is so readily available that people don't put the effort into discovering a band in its entirety these days, for instance I mentioned Nick Cave to a mate at work and he said 'I've not heard of him, I'll listen to him tonight' he came into work the next day and said 'yeah I downloaded his discography, I don't like him' I replied 'well that's fair enough so you've deleted him off your iPod then' and he said 'nah I'm keeping it all on there, I'm not going to delete it'
and the only reason he keeps it (probably till this day) is just in case anyone mentions Nick Cave he can turn around and say 'yeah I've got loads of his stuff' even though he's never listened to a fucking song
Back in the day when I was buying 3 or 4 CD's a week he would feign interest in the band so I would do a copy of the album for him, after a while he asked me to burn him a cd (I can't remember what album broke the camels back) and I told him NO he asked why and I told him that I had worked it out and I'd given him something like £80 worth of music in 4 weeks, he couldn't comprehend why I was pissed off and actually said 'it doesn't cost you anything to put it onto disc and you have already paid for it so whats the harm' I tried to tell him that I would give him a list of CD's that he could buy and then burn them all for me for free and he laughed and said no chance, even then he didn't understand why I was pissed off.
Its funny because it got to the point when I would buy a CD put it on my iPod and then just give it away, I miss having the anticipation of waiting for an album and obsessing over the booklet and reading the lyrics and shit like that, these days its released its downloaded and its gone
Who are the Beatles?
If God wanted us to be vegetarians, why are animals made of meat ?
I just checked them out on YouTube as I'm not always au fait with up and coming new bands.
They all look very young, and it seems like simple stripped down music to me, lots of guitar and catchy choruses.
To be honest, I think they sound and look a bit like an Oasis tribute, so I'm not really sure they will last long.

@Batman not a good argument. just bcuz someone does a cover song doesnt mean they were "influenced" by the artist. Big deal, a cover. Maybe the concert promoters said "do a few tunes from sgt pepper" which had just come out". So what. Maybe he just did it to please the crowd/sell tickets/....INfluenced my ass. Name any songs by Hendrix ----ANY---- which sound even remotely like he was influenced by the Beatles you mad balloon. Oh yeah maybe this one you moonbat:
Just because Mark TKO thinks Elvis was "overrated"![]()
There's 4 Beatles but there's only 1 King baby and he had more talent in his little finger.....
than entire record labels have.
I saw windwood in Hartford. Had to sit through his nineties stuff but after a while he came out with just an acoustic and did his traffic stuff, great show, I can still feel John barleycorn
