Facing felony charges for allegedly punching a girl in the face? Starting to hope Alvarez irons him out again if it even comes off.
Yuck. In June, so that was well before he fought Alvarez the first time, weird how the courts work so differently sometimes. If he was able to fight then I guess no reason to think this won’t go ahead![]()
Sergey Kovalev charged with felony assault; Feb. 2 bout with Alvarez still a go
TMZ Sports reported on Friday morning that former unified light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev was charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon (not a firearm) for allegedly punching a woman last June.
Kovalev (32-3-1, 28 KOs) was scheduled to meet Eleider Álvarez in a rematch for the WBO title on Feb. 2. Alvarez upset Kovalev back in August with a seventh-round TKO to capture the title. A source has told Sporting News the fight is scheduled to proceed as originally planned.
Sources told TMZ Sports that the woman claims the alleged incident happened on June 9 at a party in which two-time 175-pound champion hit on her. The woman states she initially turned down his overture and left the scene. She alleges that the attack took place at her cabin in Big Bear after Kovalev and a friend followed her back to her cabin. The woman reported the incident to police in Big Bear, Calif. at 12:45 a.m. Kovalev was arrested shortly thereafter and released later the same day on $50,000 bond. Kovalev appeared in court on August 27, three weeks after the Alvarez fight and entered a plea of not guilty.
The woman also claims she suffered a severely broken nose, a concussion and a displaced disk in her neck as a result of the incident.
The 35-year-old is due back in court in March 11 at 8:30 a.m. for a pre-preliminary hearing followed by a preliminary hearing on March 14 also at 8:30 a.m. If found guilty, the Russian could face up to four years in prison.

Extremely unfortunate if true because I’m a big fan of his. I will wait until the verdict is determined until I make a real judgement though.
If Kovalev thought he didn't like judges in America before he might really not like em soon :S
A matchup that saw one of the biggest upsets in 2018 will go down one more time when Eleider Alvarez defends the WBO light heavyweight championship against former two-time titleholder Sergey Kovalev on Saturday, Feb. 2, live from the Ford Center at the Star in Frisco, Texas.
Alvarez (24-0, 12 KOs), a native of Colombia fighting out of Montreal, was behind on all three scorecards heading into the seventh round of that initial August 2018 fight, when he knocked Kovalev down three times in the stanza to pull off the shocker and capture his first major world title.
It didn't take long for Kovalev (32-3-1, 28 KOs) to exercise a contract clause for an immediate rematch. Before suffering the first two losses of his career — to Andre Ward in back-to-back fights — Kovalev had bounced back with two stoppage victories, regaining the WBO belt, before losing it to Alvarez.
Can Alvarez show the boxing world what they saw six months ago wasn't a fluke? Or will the "Krusher" redeem himself and take back the title? Here's everything you need to know about Alvarez-Kovalev II.
