I imagine it's for the symbolism. Climate activists should be allowed to fly back and forth to distant destinations without being called hypocrites, as.... like you said.... ending air travel makes no sense in today's world.
The thing is she can't win either way. She was offered the chance to sail in a racing yacht, specifically designed to use no fossil fuels, already built, to attend a climate conference she was invited to, and bravely despite never undergoing the kind of voyage, accepted that invitation. It is a real achievement to undertake that kind of trip, but you would never think so if you listened to most of the faux Alpha males here.
Many of them would bottle it if you took them out on a light swell ffs.
Count me in on that group.
Never been sailor material, reason why I've never fancied going on my son-in-law's sailboat, unless it's firmly docked and we're just having a few beers in the thing.
She has always said that she is not telling other people what they should do, only trying to put into practice what she preaches, and draw attention to real climate issues. (It is why she has nearly always used trains across Europe) Transatlantic flights use about the same amount of fuel as a years worth of driving a car, and so yes it makes sense to be aware of that, and cut down, if as an individual you want to reduce your carbon footprint. People like Brock swan around all over the world claiming that people who live in the suburb are cowards as though his own failure to put down roots is some kind of achievement . Who cares what he thinks about anything to be honest?
Kids today get so much shite thrown at them for just sitting down in front of screens and supposedly not knowing about how hard their parents generation had it, and yet here is a youngster going way, way, way out of her comfort zone for something she believes in, and cynical bitter old middle age men (the bastards) are virtue signalling their disdain for her, as though it is a positive attribute. She is not Leonard de Caprio or Al Gore jetting around everywhere, and yet she is still getting all these self righteous blokes labeling her as a hypocrite, or almost as bad, as a poor abused girl who must surely be being used by puppet masters behind the scenes.
I think you'll find some of "those people" are actually criticizing the adults behind the scenes, rather than the girl herself. I still find it hard to believe she's accomplished everything from Day One all by herself, without the slightest bit of encouragement and support from climate activist adults wanting to score big sensationalist points. Surely you must realize that many of these adults take full advantage of the taboo of criticizing a kid, lest all hell come down on the critic's heathen head.
I find that almost the most offensive thing, because it removes any ides of agency and achievement from
Young People
Women
Autisitic People
Again... young women are championing causes all over the globe, and getting their due respect and support from people like me. But there's a little bit of everything in the world, so I'm sure there are people like you describe.
As though the people criticizing her are somehow clever for punching down on a figure, who whatever you think of her, has already achieved more than virtually any of them EVER will.
