Let me be brutally frank here. Not once have I ever claimed Canelo won't go down as a boxing great. He's put in his time... he's won his big fights.
My contention with him has always been the way he carefully constructed his career. No need to go into specifics here. I've said all this a thousand times.
His hype has always exceeded his substance. He has ducked... he has marinated... he has stacked the deck... he has done everything except put himself out there fearlessly and let the chips fall where they may.
Even fellow Mexicans can't stand the dude.
He's everything that is wrong with boxing.
That he unified at 168... sure. He'll always be remembered as a great 168.
Of course, he benefitted from a group of British boxers to whom he will always be indebted.
TO YOU... he has a great legacy. To me he's just an overly hyped manufactured diva, who carefully picked and chose his opponents at HIS timing. He had the WBC and many judges in his pocket.
When he's gone... good riddance.
