February 13, 1999. Oscar De La Hoya (29-0, 24 KO) vs. Ike Quartey (34-0-1, 29 KO) for De La Hoya's WBC Welterweight Title.
The judges awarded DLH a split decision victory 116-112, 116-113, 114-115 (Quartey).
Normally I don't want to do a bunch of fights with the same fighters, and I know we just did DLH-Whitaker, but I couldn't pass this one up. Besides being a controversial decision, this is just a GREAT fight. I actually think this is the most exciting of all of DLH's fights, I like it better than the first Mosley fight. Two champions in their prime going at it for 12 rounds.

I thought De La Hoya won 3 out of the first 4, when he was busier than Quartey.
In the 6th, both fighters were knocked down on clean punches, I scored the round for Quartey because I thought he the knockdowns cancelled each other out, and that Quartey controlled the majority of the round. I scored it 10-9 instead of 9-8 because that was how Lederman scored it, so I assume it falls under the 10 point must rules.
Quartey dominated the middle of the fight, buckling DLH's knees several times. I thought DLH showed tons of heart in the 12th for coming out strong when he knew he needed a huge round, and I thought Quartey showed tremendous heart for staying up and continuing to throw punches even as DLH was nailing him with big punches on the ropes.
Halpern could have stopped the fight and it would have been OK, but I thought he was right to let it go on, because Quartey was still throwing back.
Usually a close fight has lots of clsoe rounds that could go either way, but I thought Quartey clearly won 7 rounds in this fight, and that DLH clearly won his 5 rounds. I think it should have been an easy fight to score. It's a complete joke that one judge had it 116-112 for Oscar, that card isn't even close.
